Problems with Omeprazole but ok with Pantoprazole?

Have any of you had side effects from taking Omeprazole but were ok with something else like pantoprazole? I started ranitidine 2 or 3 weeks ago, but it made me ache all over, so I reluctantly switched to Omeprazole. After a week my feet and ankles swelled up with fluid so I stopped taking it 2 days ago. I'm seeing my GP on Friday who will probably suggest pantoprazole, but as this is another PPI which has similar side effects to Omeprazole, I would imagine I'd have the same problems. Has anybody here changed from Omeprazole after getting side effects to Pantoprazole with no problems?

Hi,

Yes! I also had a fairly violent reaction to omeprazole. I actually vomited after first tablet, and felt fairly unwell. Was not willing to continue.

My doctor encouraged me to try another PPI, and said that she found patients of hers had had less side effects when taking pantoprazole. I seemed to be fine on that PPI. Since then, have also taken rabeprazole, which I am currently taking. Also seem to be OK on that, and it seems to help a bit better that pantoprazole.

So yes, it does seem patients have very individual side effect reactions to PPIs, and also whether they help the underlying condition.

I would add that I felt a bit "odd" on both the second and third PPIs I took for about the first week, and had quite bad insomnia too, but that settled. I guess one has to judge whether the side effects are tolerable, and if the medication seems to be helping the underlying condition enough to want to "put up" with any side effects.

I have been diagnosed with gastritis. I was given omoprozole but felt dreadful. Dizzy and not focused. Doctor gave me pills for dizzy ness first. Before I worked out it was omoprozole.

changed to lansoprozole same thing.

changed to pansoprozole still no better.

Changed to ranitidine no dizzy spells. I have weened myself down from 2 x 150mg a day to 1 every other day.

I ache all over especially in my chest area and my legs. Never thought about the tablets again!

think I will go back to docs and see what they say. Had a bad flare of gastritis yesterday, completely wiped me out. Own fault ate wrong food.

I've been taking PPI's for about thirteen years. Omeprazole is the only one that has controlled my acid reflux and helped protective my stomach from the effects of other drugs. The others worked for a while but their effectiveness wore off.

I usually get side effects from drugs prescribed but not from Omeprazole. My only concern about this type drug is that by reducing acid it can allow polyps to grow and tummy bugs are not killed off.

A GP I had who took Omeprazole stopped it when going on holiday to what he called "Mucky countries" and relied on gaviscon instead.
