Progress report

Hi Hippies, just on 2 weeks post op and have been walking round house with 1 crutch and on the I'd occasion been walking without sticks, but might have overdone it a little. When I p was putting weight through leg last night I was getting a lot of pain from hip, I have got up this morning and the pain has eased so I think I will have to slow down a bit.

Hope all you hippies are doing well.

Sounds like you've just pulled a muscle if it came on that quickly and had eased overnight. Dial it back a bit for a few days then build up again. Don't naturally assume that you've "overdone" something - a pulled muscle can happen to anyone! But your muscles have had a battering and need a bit of time to ease into working normally again. It's all about getting a balance, because if you do too little, you can end up with exactly the same problem! There's no user manual that tells you what is right for you, so there are going to be hiccups along the way....

Thanks Beth, your probably right. I had my other hip done 3 years ago and went back to work after 8 weeks but went back to early, this time I am going to take a bit longer off to make sure I am right.

I hope you were told that when you use one crutch it has to be on the non operated side so that it goes down simultaneously with the op side to give it support & balance. Reading these posts it seems that a lot of people are discharged with very little advice. By the way the PT in hospital showed me to get into bed half way down (preferably on the op side) and at an angle so as you slide in by pulling on the arms the leg is gradually raised by the bed  however as I am tall I half fell off the other side of the bed! I then worked out it was easier to get in at the end of the bed and go back in a straight line -not possible with hospital beds. Obviously not if the end is against a wall!

Hi Jomary, yes I know about where to hold the crutches because I have used them many times. I was told the same from the hospital.

I am 8 weeks out and at first I would over do it cut back the next day but keep going..Today pain is over only time it hurts is when I sit down for a longer period than 15 minutes when I first get up I am stiff after a few steps I am good. No pain no crutches, no cane, and no walker...I feel great!!!  First time since 2009 that my hip has not hurt

Hi, sounds like your on the right track. I hope I am the same as you after 8 weeks. Good luck

You will be fine just keep working at it. I think I had a huge advantage over most by coming home alone. My daughter was sick so she couldn't be here with me to help so I had to just bite the dust and do it. By the end of day 3 I was fixing my own food washing dishes letting the dogs go in and out..everyday was a challenge the first two weeks..I did all the exercises, my home health care was a joke I got rid of them fast...I think just keep going is the key and don't let yourself get too stiff sitting too much.I got released last week and I am back to work this week. I also had two other big surgeries on my eyes...November  was eye surgery and hip surgery then again in December the other eye surgery so it has been a challenge for sure

Hang in there you can do this!

Thanks for the advice, you keep up the good work. Hope all goes well.

Hi tony,

I am two weeks post op as well and started walking around house with just one crutch! It's great! And I have been cooking dinners and doing a wee bit of housework as I have always been active and can't sit too long as I go nuts!

I go out for a walk everyday and it's so good!

Listen to your own body as everyone is different and we all heal at different levels!

And keep going! Best of luck

hi tony,

sounds you are doing great !!!  just a word of warning :

We are so eager to ditch the crutches etc. that we forget why we need to use them-

The hip joint implant is rotating (getting up and down, turn,  etc) in the cup as well as taking pressure, like when you walk your weight will press it down

The purpose of the  crutches or walker or sticks  is to avoid a fall or sudden twist. Weight-bearing is safe immediately after surgery. But until the implants have grown into the bone, a process that takes 4 to 6 weeks, a fall or other sudden twisting force on the leg can risk implant loosening or injury to the leg.

Because the hip replacement components are designed to heal directly to bone without use of bone cement, the  stability of the implants in your body is assured by 4 to 6 weeks, at the minimum.

Then, when you feel confident and balanced, you can walk without  aids, but if there is any question, stay with a cane until you feel safe ---

Too early without also (in mycase) made me limp ... I really needed to learn how to walk properly, stable and balanced ..

Of course we all heal at our personal rate and each case is different …

as said here many times before : it is not a sprint darling, but a marathon -

big warm hug

Hi Tony. Glad you are feeling better today. I wanted to do a cane this week and my PT said no. She said I need to heal and gain more strength then go to a cane.I fractured my femur on day 19,6 months ago so she is having me go a little slower . Do not hurt yourself . She states to increase the workload of the muscles so that they are done at fatigued but not in pain . Take care Tony you are doing great .

Hi Msky, Thanks very much for your advice. Sorry to hear you had further trauma but are getting over it.

Take care, hope it all goes well.

YES! SLOW DOWN! Do your PT and rest the leg/hip in between!

Hi Tony I'm with u first hip Feb 16 2ndhip 28th Dec I'm back on my feet been to gym back at wrk all within 3 wk yes I have over done it some days but I'm happier to get back to normality so good luck to u if u can do it go for it I'm still achy but first hip I wasn't a bit achy or sore strange how rwo ops aren't the same good luck

Hi nicscott, good to hear how well your doing, some days are better than others. Not getting much pain from hip but it's just more from the wound site and muscles. I am going to get as much time off work as possible because you don't get better thought of, I work in a car factory so on your feet a lot of the time.

Keep up the good work Tony.
