quit therapy because i hated it. does mediation really work or will eye movement and reprocessing

im going to try eye movement and reprocessing to ged ride of bad trauma and awful things that happened to me. will that work better than any other methods.

Hi Nicoleta - sorry to hear you didn't get along with the therapy.

EMDR (the eye movement thing) is also a type of therapy, but it is one that attempts (at least in part) to exercise a certain part of the brain called the "Amygdala".  This part of the brain is well developed at birth and is responsible for many things, including the fight/flight reflex.  It also records and holds emotional memories and this can be super-powerful as it take some years before other parts of the brain 'come online' that help us sequence and contextualise experiences - that help the Amygdala to dampen down overwhelming experiences.   In other words, if your trauma was something starting in earliest childhood, EMDR may help and act as a kind of physio-for-the-brain and, as you say, help with becoming aware of certain things, and integrating them more fully.  It is still therapy though, not something that is just done to you... I imagine the practitioner will want to (and should) talk with you, as this will be part of things.

Wish you the best - I've written a bit about this if it helps (though I don't offer EMDR myself):  goto the Blog section and see post "It's not Brain Surgery...is it?"

Hi Nicoleta, I've heard of the eye movement thing to help with PTSD so you can only give it a go.

Will it work better than any other method, I don't know you can only try it and see. It may take a few goes and patience before it works on the other hand could work straight away.

Good luck and tell us how you get on.

Neil

Different things work for different ppl give it a go it can't do any harm. Good luck and let us know if it starts to work. X
