Please see a doctor and ask to get a CT scan to see if you have a sinus infection. If you have a signicant other, do they have the same symptoms. Some anaerobic infections have these same symptoms.....
Hi benjamin, try rinsing you sinuses with warm distilled water and plain table salt make sure water isn't too warm and salt is completely dissolved and see if the smell goes away temporarily. sounds to me like you may have a sinus infection, I've had several. very hard to get rid of but try that before you go see your doctor. sadly doctors aren't very helpful when it comes to sinus issues. the smell coming from my mouth was absolutely coming from my sinuses, my septum was so badly deviated that the mucus would become trapped and I could not clear. I finally had surgery two weeks ago to straighten it so I can breathe and clear my nose. still recovering but so far a great improvement. doctors would not approve surgery for my so i paid for my own through a plastic surgeon.
the smell can absolutely be caused by your stomach. have him test you for H Pylori which is the bacteria which causes ulcers. my breath smelled like poo for a long time until I was successfully treated for it. acid coming up your throat will weaken your sphincter give you a sore throat and create a horrible smell coming out of your mouth. it may also just be that your stomach produces too much acid and not necessarily have the bacteria. it is a simple test though.
I've had the same problem for a long time. Doctors have mostly been uninterested and unhelpful. I spent years seeing ENT specialist who all said different things. When I finally got to see Gastro the first two consultant said hallitosis doesn't come from the stomach and didn't do any tests, the third has organised some test and thinks it is probably the lower esophagel sphinter (the valve at the top of the stomach) is weak and is letting the contents of the stomach back up in to the throat and the back of the nose. The half digested food in the throat is probably the cause of my halitosis and it is also likely to be irritating my nose and causing the post nasal drip. The post nasal drip is also contributing to the hallitosis in my case.
There are various ways the stomach can cause halitosis, so definately worth getting it checked out. Doctors and consultants have given me a lot of conflicting information over the years so always worth getting a second opinion!
Also if it's a bacterial infection in the stomach causing it a lot of people on another forum have said that metronidazole has helped/cured it for them. It can be bought online, but didn;t help me though.
Hi Ben! When I get an intuitive flash it's usually spot on! The gut is one long tube that goes from the facial lips down to the anal exit. Pipelines have to be periodically cleaned by placing a "pig" into the line to scrape all the way down. I am going to suggest to my wife (who has recently developed a serious case of the "zacklies" that she snack on scrapping foods such as popcorn, apples, celery, carrots so that the accumulated rotten mucus that must be lining her esophogus can be regularly dislodged and moved toward her intestines where it belongs. Comedian Robin Williams (r.i.p.) said that the "zacklies" is when your breath smells "zackly" like poop. Well it IS poop if its stagnating in your throat! Scape it out several times a day. Please let us know if this works for you. Thanks!
hi again, Pylori is treated with a combination of Losec (stops your stomach from producing acid), two differenrt antibiotics and they have now added doses of Pepto Bismal which has been found to be very effective in killing the bacteria. first though you need to determine what's causing it. mine was both stomach and sinuses. my septum was so crooked that the mucus which drains down your throat was getting trapped drying out and just became nothing but really smelly bacteria i could not push through with rinses of any kind. that was the worst smell that ever came out of my mouth.
i would try rinsing first, maybe go to your pharmacy and ask if they have a sinus rinse. i found it helped me to determine where the smell was coming from. if it is from your sinuses it will go away temporarily so it's a good place to start.
afraid so but at least it helped me when i was planning to go out with friends i would rinse my sinuses and it would clear old mucus that had a horrible smell that way i would not feel awkward when speaking closely with someone.
