I am going to see a surgeon in Jan to talk about surgery, I have a hianal hurnia size 8 cm and it is causing me terrible breathing problems. Does anyone know if surgery can be successfuly done on such a large hurnia. Thanks for any info you can give.
The answer is yes. Mine was the whole stomach herniated into chest. The surgery has helped me tremendously.

I am now 7 weeks since surgery. My whole stomach was in my chest. I have had problems since despite carefully following the diet recommendations. I have been very sick usually at night
despite trying to sleep as upright as possible, also pain in my
jaw, throat and down to breast bone mimicking a heart attack.
I knew from the forum that this could be gastric reflux, or I would have been even more concerned. My vagus nerve has been
damaged/destroyed during the surgery.
On a positive note I can now enjoy food and I have an appetite I
Have not had for years just can't be sure of it staying down.
I am hoping this will all settle , I see my surgeon on 8th
January. He did a good job I think as he managed to do it
Keyhole instead of the open operation I was expected to have.
I would ask many questions and bring up the problems I have
had. I was told it was a major operation although keyhole and
took 5 hours.
I did not have quality of life before as I was
breathless had chest pain could only eat soups and pudding
which were high calorie so didn't lose weight so subsequently
looked too healthy and wasn't taken seriously for years.
This all seems very negative I liked my surgeon and am hoping
He has a solution to the problems I have been having or maybe it will just take more time
Thank you Elvis
I am concerned with what may be the side effects, I can eat more if a variety of foods.
I would like to ask a question about your surgeon, has he done many of these type surgeries? and did you have the nissan or the hills?, I am just trying to find out all I can to know what I may be facing. Some people write of doing well after surgery and others have complacations.
I had a Nissen Fundoplication done two months ago which included a hiatus hernia repair. The surgery went well but the side effects have been awful. Nausea and diarrhea since I had surgery. I've started taking probiotics in the hope it will get my stomach back to normal. Good luck with your surgery.

Hi Jo,
I dont know how large mine is, was told it was very large, but then she said she wouldnt do it because of my diebetes.
I have resurched this, and i am not so sure of such a good success rate, many people report it returning after a time.
I am going to look into faith healing.
Wish you well.

Hello Linda
Thank you for the info and faith in God is very good, I also have been praying for healing and to give the doctor wisdom and also give me wisdom. I also have diabetes, I do keep it controlled with diet and a small amount of medication.
I will also pray for you.
Jo
Thank you Val
I do hope you get to feeling better, I have read there is good medication for nausea to get you through the healing process. I am so hoping and praying that I don't have the bad side effects as I have been reading that some people don't. I pray the best for you
Jo
Thank you Jo my thoughts and prayers are with you. Do hope all goes well for you.

Hi Val
Went to see surgeon in Seattle and really did like him, he recommends surgery for me but he is having me do 2 more test first. Please tell me what medications is best for nausea, diarrhea, and pain just in case I need them.
I am praying I won't have complications or side affects . Thank you
Jo
My doctor prescribed ante nausea pills for me but I try not to take them. I've started taking probiotics and eating yogurt. Also, I drink ginger tea. Actually anything with ginger is good for nausea. I also had a couple of tests done before the surgery. Sounds as if you got a good doctor. Good luck with the surgery.
Hi Valerie
I pray your complete healing comes very soon, may I ask what kind of a surgeon did you have?, I am a little nervous about the surgery as I am older but it is a must for me, my breathing is getting worse and foods are getting more limited, already don't have much to choose from. What liquid would recommend for after surgery?
Thanks again
Jo
Hi Jo,
Thank you for your kind concern. I too am an older lady (72) so like you I was very apprehensive about having this surgery. You will be on a liquid diet for the first week or two after surgery. your doctor will give you a sheet of all the foods and drinka you can take. Sounds as if this surgery will certainly be beneficial to you. Its nice not to suffer anymore acid reflux or other problems associated with a Hiatus hernia.
Good luck with your surgery....Val
Thank you so much for your help Valerie, I do appreciate it.
I hope I can get the food list before I go in for surgery so I can
shop for what I need and have it on hand when I get home.
I will be going to Seattle WA and I live about 2 hrs away and part of that is on the Ferry.
Blessings on you Valerie,
Jo
