When I met with the surgeon yesterday he seemed to really like a spinal with sedation. I told him I like propofol because I've had it before for quick surgeries. From what I understand you can have light sedation or heavy sedation which I would want so I don't wake up during. You dont have that grogginess when you have propofol thats why I would like it. I would love to hear from anyone who went this route. Thanks in advance.
Hi I had epidural with sedation I don't remember a thing woke up in recovery feeling cold but once warmed up felt good
Hi,
I underwent a bi-lateral THR in August done by spinal injection with sedation,, all went well, and arrived back on the ward sitting up and getting something to eat and drink.
I need my knees replaced and will have these done under spinal and sedation...
Good luck...

Good to hear Debbie Thanks for sharing! All the best to you
Thanks tracy So glad to hear that Good luck to you!
Elaine I love hearing this thats what I want Thanks for sharing and all the best to you.
I like you went for spinal and full GA. never again. I was really nauseous for days after and couldn't eat. If I ever had to have another it would be spinal and light sedation.
People say that you recover so much quicker with this. I was in a private hospital where the food is 5 star and I couldn't face a thing.
Good luck and a speedy recovery.
Hi,
I had spinal block with sedation, because I didn't want to hear it all! It was brilliant, didn't hear or feel a thing. Was woken up by the surgeon saying "well done, it's gone really well." Went to the recovery room for about 20 minutes, then to the ward, where I had my lunch. I really recommend it. Later that afternoon I was walking with a frame, and able to go to the bathroom on my own. I wish you the very best.
I will look forward to up dates and questions. Or like most of us on here a rant.....
I had spinal with sedation. I woke up during surgery cousin hear like hammering and could feel being pushed. I was like WTH!! 😳😳. I couldn't see anything cause there was like a curtain in front of my face. Someone asked if i was ok cause I almost fully awakened then that was last thing i remember. I guess they added more sedation. But the next day I was so sick threw up all day couldn't eat for a week! I lost my appetite. Second surgery had general anesthesia after surgery threw up about 3x. Was in & out till next morning. Good luck on your surgery and prayers for a speedy recovery! LD
Meant could hear hammering....
You poor thing. Sounds like a complete nightmare...
I have had two Hip replacements, and both times they used spinal with sedation, first surgery woke up to hear hammering sound, more sedation given pretty quickly to put me back under. I was interviewed the following day to see if I was distressed, no way, not after I realised how much better I was after surgery, just delighted I could stand and move about without that grinding and tight feeling in my hip joint, and very little pain, far less than I expected, even though I was covered by pain killers, but nurses amazed i was using so little, made me very sick vomiting when I did use pain killer, reaction to morphine that is well known, so not much fun there.
Part of the interview was a study on spinal verus GA, and nurse that were doing the study showed me the results of their study to date, and even they expressed the opninion the complications were much less on spinal, patients better generally, earlier discharge, and the older and frailer the patients the better the result.
2nd THR I was also given spinal, and topped up with a tiny dose of propofol, and sedation to put me to sleep, also changed pain relief to Fentanol as I had been soooo sick on morphine, ended up being even better re pain control on fentanol, up and about without assistance by 12 hours after surgery to use toilet, although I did get myelf growled at for doing so, they feared I might fall and they didn;t want that happending.
hi mary ,
ultmately it is your decision -
I didn't want to hear, feel or smell anything and chose GA for both surgeries-
I took a deep breath ,opened my eyes and was done - I didn't have bad side effects, only some grogginess -
big warm hug
renee
Wow thanks so much lyn. That's what I want the propof I've had that before for short term surgeries. Do I just tell them I don't want to wake up during or just take my chances because they will be there to put me back under right?
Thanks Renee. Hugs right back❤️
Dont be afraid to say if i wake up I'll make sure I punch you in the nose with a smile, make yourself heard and sometimes a little humour helps them remember that you are not just a number. Yes i think it is more than acceptable to say make sure I don't wake up.
I had the spinal with sedation and it was perfect.I woke up in the OR to do a transfer from the OR table to the stretcher.I woke up before I hit RR and had no issue with grogginess.Saying that, this is not that short and there is a ton of manipulation and let's not forget hammering..Did not want to wake up for that.
I had not heard about spinal with sedation until the day before my surgery. I was apprehensive as having both hips done together. However it was explained to me in great detail and that due to having low blood pressure it was really the best for me.
I was scared of waking up and hearing things, but nothing at all, and to wake up in recovery without feeling groggie and sick was so nice. Getting back on to the ward and being given a coffee and lunch was even better.
I am facing 2x knee replacements and will definately go down this route again as I felt so much better not having had a GA..
Good luck and hope this helps you make your decision
