Relaxation causes anxiety?

Hi everyone.

So I've noticed that one of the causes of my anxiety seems to be relaxation. Whenever I find myself in a calm or quiet state, my anxiety is suddenly triggered which causes all of these thoughts to go. It's difficult cause I can't do the things I used to like such as get massages, run, go to church or sit at the beach. Has anyone experienced this and overcome it?

Thanks!

I agree the less i do the more i get it its like ya mind just doesnt shut off but wen im at work its more barable i get anxiety in my head and iy drived me crazy i miss also doin wat i used to .

Hi Julain, that's funny I'm exactly the same, when I am occupied I seem to be fine and the moment I get a little time to myself is when my anxiety is at its worst, for example the moment I finish work, instead of being happy to relax, I feel anxious or low. and the normal feeling associated with it come back. I guess the idea is to learn how to relax, I try to do relaxing things that also require a bit of concentration (like knitting-cool hey?) but I'm also trying to learn how to relax and simply enjoy things, so I'm sorry I can't help you with more suggestions!

How long have you felt this way? And are you on medication?

How long have you been like this?

Hi, I've felt like this for a number of years, but on and off, recently it's been worse so I've started taking sertraline as my doctor believes I have chronic anxiety. However I've only been taking them for about two weeks so I'm hoping they will kick in soon. How about you?

Ive been like this sine july when i got married i was that nervous im guessin thats what triggered it but its sriv8ng me crazy i just dont know how 2 enjoy life anymore as this is affecting me every day , i refuse to take medication and cant see cbt helping to b honest just wana wake up and b me again .

Hi Charlotte, I'm just wondering why you refuse to take medication? Obviously that's a personal choice, but I believe it can be really helpful! Either way I think you should speak to your doctor as there is lots of help out there, even though often we can believe that nothing will help!

Hope you feel better soon!

Almost 6 weeks. I've been on Prozac for five days so hoping it goes away!

Hi Julian, I have experienced this too. It is because your body is 'letting go' when you are relaxing, and its almost like when you do that thing where sometimes you jolt awake as you are trying to go to sleep. Its totally normal, and i find that breathing exercises work the best for me, because it relaxes the body, or some light yoga before bed to release the tension in your muscles, along with the breathing works well too. Hope this helps!

I'm sure it will go away soon as your medecine kicks in

that's a helpful analogy! thanks!

Im hopefully doin a second round of ivf next year and just need to avoid anything like that really but need my head in the best possible place its a hard one just a vicious circle , doctor suggested cbt may have ti give it a go .

Yup, I had the same; always when I was driving in my car (which I enjoy) I would get an attack and I had to park on the emergency lane several times.

Amongst other things, learning to intentionally relax, and build up a steady relaxed state after a while, helped me out of this. Nowadays, when I feel  my stress level is going up I pay extra attention to my breathing exercises. My attacks have not returned till now.

I wonder if a full workout daily would help you out more then forcing yourself to relax. Everyone has a different way to calm themselves.

I should try a longer workout. I've been running but it doesn't help at all either sad Maybe if I do a longer cardio workout!

My therapist has me do this. Sit or lay down. Try to do some deep breathing. Clench your right fist as hard as you can for 5 seconds then let go for 10. Feel yourself relieving the tension. Now do it again and notice how it feels for your hand to relax and not be so tense and anxious. She has me go through my whole body solely focusing on the body part at hand...i.e. hands, feet, jaw, shoulders, eyebrows. It really helps relax and helps your mind understand how tense and anxious you really are. It's kinda like letting all the anxiety go piece by piece. Good luck to you. I hope this helps!

How are you feeling recently??
