Hi I have recently had bilateral Revision THR. Which encountered some problems anyone else had difficulties with these precedures?
Hi, Can you tell us more about it? I haven't had a revision but in the future at some point I will be so your experience is valuable.
Hi Mike,
I am having a right hip revision at the beginning of October, as I have metal on metal implant. Would be interested to hear your experiences.
Hi Jean,
I too had metal on metal prior to the revision, I now have ceramic hips at the point of contact, ie. 'ball and socket'. They are apparently more prone to dislocation than stainless steel but move far easier. You must follow the post op regime no bending the leg over 90 degrees et cetra. The operation itself is more difficult than the inital hip replacement as all the cement holding the hip in place has to be removed, both in the femur and the socket, before the new one can be fitted, it can be a lenthy process. I'm still healing so I can't give you are they better or worse answer certianly the pain from my hips has gone away, but I am still very sore from the side issues.
Hi julliette,
A revision THR is a lengthy operation more difficult than an original replacement. All cement holding both parts of the hip in place has to be removed before a new one can be fitted. I am not a surgeon and I do not want to give details that may be incorrect, because all people and situations are different. It is imperative you discuss all aspects of any surgery with your doctor who will know your personal situation.
Mike
Hi Mike,
Had a cementless implant originally, and surgeon told me they hoped to remove just the head and replace it with ceramic, although it isn't always possible and sometimes they have to take out the stem. Am hoping this won't be necessary! I would think the cup in the pelvis part is going to be harder to remove and there may be more bone loss. I am also going to be fitted with ceramic on ceramic.
I have heard that revised hips are more prone to dislocation and other problems, and also that the op is longer and more difficult. I will definitely be observing the hip precautions afterwards, and I expect the recovery and rehab to be longer this time. How long ago was yours done, and how is the recovery going?
