I have been taking rizatriptan during a migraine attack but whilst it gives me some relief,  the migraine returns around 7-10 hours after , I take another and again, it gives some relief (perhaps less than the first time) but returns but can be a lot worse and so I then try and see it through without any medication . Does anyone else experience similar issues with this drug and should I try another triptan? I have tried zomitriptan in the past but it didn’t help.

I been taking NUROFEN 200mg. 2 in the morning, 2 in the evening, and 2 in the afternoon for days and finally I feel some kind of relief..

Horrible feeling doe...i have Hemiplegic migraine with aura and I had never had this as worse as this time...

I took codeine and nothing, I took morphine and does not help me..

Hi Cindy

Are you taking the Rizatriptan at the onset of a headache?? When you just start to feel like you MAY be getting a headache......take one right away!  Otherwise if you take it when the headache is going into a migraine......it's too late.  So take the Rizatriptan on the onset and if your headache does not go away within 2 hours then you can take another Rizatriptan.....but no more than 2 in a 24 hour day.  I try to rest if I can and close my eyes. Sometimes I take a nausua medication along with the Rizatriptan. Maybe if you take the second Rizatriptan two hours after the first...you won't get a worse migraine later on.  The key is to knock out the migraine.

Hi Cindy

I take eletriptans and sometimes they don't work and like you sometimes the attacks return.  My neuro suggested taking an ibuprofen with the eletriptan and then 1 at 8 hourly intervals for 48 hours after the attack.  This normally stops the 2nd attack.

Yes YorkshireLass....a friend of mine takes a Fioricet and adds an ibuprofen.  I am unable to take any NSAIDS so I am unable to take ibuprofen but it seems to work well with my friend.  Cindy should ask her doctor if she can take an ibuprofen along with the Rizatriptan........that may be just what she needs to knock the migraine from becoming one!!!  Thank you for sharing that.....these blogs are so wonderful!

I used to take Rizatriptan until my Neuro changed me to Naratriptan. She said Naratriptan takes longer to work but also lasts longer.  Since swapping I have found that I no longer need to take more medication later in the day, like I did with Rizatriptan. Maybe a change of Triptan is worth a try. Good Luck.

Yes these blogs are very useful and I have had a lot of advice from them.

I should also add I recently followed the advice from an American doctor who published a book, he was a fellow sufferer and has kicked his migraines altogether.

It's a bit drastic but he suggests a totally wheat free diet, alcohol and chocolate free, low sugar and carbs.  I've been on it 2 months and have so far halved the attacks.biggrin

Ive tried them all. Imetrex nasal spay was the best. But significant HTN, and a vascular abnormality made them a health risk so I can no longer use them.  I’m a vegetarian with a healthy life, so it’s all genetics. I’ve literally tried everything. Botox is my last hope & im having toxic effects from it too. I’m glad you have a treatment that helps somewhat, take it as a blessing

I have the same problem with NSAIDS. Causes HTN & affects my kidneys. I use Fioricet but don’t want to rely on it forever. Botox was my last hope & it’s living hell

I am in the US.  Is that the KETO diet?  It's very popular here in the US and just read an article that it can stop migraines.  We all need to stay away from all processed foods and all that you listed.  I started on it but ended up losing 10 pounds......good if you want to lose weight.......just good for our bodies!! Eating clean and as Organic as possible.

Thanks everyone for your replies - I will certainly try the neurofen with the rizatriptan and perhaps a change of triptan.  Its quite hard to take on onset though as they start with a headache and then develops into a migraine later .  I don’t get any aura, just gradual pain that intensifies over 2 days making me feel quite ill. They are lasting about a week and occur every 4-7 weeks .

You take the Rizatriptan right when you start to feel like your getting a headache.  If you wait until the migraine starts to take the Rizatriptan .........then it's too late and harder to fight off migraine.  Please do not medicate yourself by all of our recommendations...always ask your doctor first before changing or trying other meds. I'm not familiar with Nurofen I would not take that with Rizatriptan without talking with your doctor!  Also you need to be careful with the triptans as you don't want to take them for many days as you don't want to get rebounding headaches.  It's always good to google your meds to learn more about them.

I am on detox from Rizatriptan, you should only take 6 per month, so please be careful.  Now I'm taking Naproxen and Paracetamol for the pain most days.  Good luck with it.

thank you...yes you cannot take Rizatriptan like an aspirin.  I believe no more than 9 per month...unless I have it wrong.  If you take too much you can get rebound headaches.  You said you are detox....is that what happened to you?  Thank you for sharing!

Hi there

Yes I have rebound headaches. Was told that must be a maximum dose of 6 a month. Have been off Rizatriptan for 2 weeks now. I am going round in circles. The doctors don"t really seem to be interested. My neurologist told me that the best thing to do is to "go for a walk".

Don’t you just wish they had a migraine lasting a good month. A neurologist told me I couldn’t take any triptans because of my hypertension & a vascular abnormality on my MRI. But wouldn’t tell me what to do or take when I got one. It was like Hi you have sucky migraines, oh well to bad.

your doctor should know how to treat rebounding headaches. I have prescription. It's a steroid pack : Methylprednisolone 4mg TBPK  Generic for Medrol.  It stops the rebounding from Rizatriptan.  All those suffering from migraines need to go to good neurologist. I hope this helps.
