Salt pipe inhalers

Has anyone used one of these. I got one two days ago after reading all the literature I could find on them. I have used it by following the directions but I find it makes me more wheezy and breathless. I have been a chronic asthmatic for about fifty years and I have been on foradil and qvar for the last 20 years. Any information from anyone in a similar situation would be really appreciated.

I never got around to trying the salt pipe inhalers but recently my physios put me on to a saline (salt) inhaltion through a nebuliser, which I imagine might be similar. I found I had to use it with liberal amounts of ventolin, since it closed up my airways immediately. The physios encouraged this, though I've never used ventolin more than once or twice a day in my life!

The saline (I don't know about the salt pipe) thins or sort of dilutes the mucus in my experience, and makes it much less thick and sticky. And teh salt also seems to irritate teh lungs in a good way (?) making it more likely to chuck the mucus out as well.

Do you have physios or a lung consultant you can discuss this with?

Sheena, I found the an article on the internet that may help you in your quest. I dont use one, but think I will try sodium chloride nebullizer solution first. Have you tried that? Not saying you should, just wondering.

Actually I don't have a physio or a consultant. You may find this hard to believe but I only deal with my gp. I have never had function tests or been assessed by consultants. Always been too afraid of hospitals. This will probably seem strange to you.

Not strange at all, probably quite sensible in my mind. So in that case, just bear in mind that the salt affects quite a lot of people that way, it's common and still a recommended practice. Just make sure your ventolin is handy and use it 15 minutes before you use the salt pipe for best effect.

I have never used a salt pipe

But i have tests to make sure i can tolerate the saline through a nebulizer.

I also have asthma and bronchectisis

It seems to me you are reacting to it and wouldn't keep taking it till you see your gp again

The salt drys and draws fluid from your lungs.

I would recommend you see a specialist

I have seen one for 4 yrs now and i totally put my trust in her . They know what they're doing and will give you the tests and medication you need

SORRY TO HEAR THIS THE SALT BINDS TO THE MUCUS  AND HELPS BRING IT UP --I LOVE MY PIPE --I ALSO USE THYME HERBAL TEA  WITH GINGER AND LEMON  AND  HONEY -THINS MUCUS AND CALMS THINGS DOWN --DO TRY THESE--MARSHMALLOW TEA LAMS THE AIRWAYS TOO!!
