Severe eye pain/heartburn

Hello. I have severe eye pain. The eye doctor told me last year that I have dry eyes so I started using eye drops. The eye drops don't seem to help. My eyes burn so bad that I can't concentrate and all I want to do is close them and go to sleep. I also notice at times when my eyes sting that I get heartburn. I'm thinking I have something other than dry eyes. What is going on with me? I feel like my eyes are getting worse. This occurs more and more.

Hello Warda, are your eyes red?

Are you still using the eye drops?  I have dry eyes and use Hyabak preservative free drops during the day and VitA-POS lubricating gel, also preservative free, at night.

You need preservative free products because the preservatives can cause similar problems to the ones you describe.

Do you spend a lot of time staring at a screen?  For example, computer, phone, tablet, gaming console and even television?  All these things mean that you blink less and therefore your eyes become dry.

Give the screens a break and use the drops more frequently and see if that helps.  If it doesn't , then you need to return to the Ophthalmologist.

What country are you in?

Good luck

Yes they are red.

Your symptoms are similar to mine, only less severe. I have inflammatory filamental keratitis (can you beat that for a fancy name!?)

Mrs Mop is right that many of us are allergic to preservatives and so preservative-free eyedrops can make a huge dfference.

I went through about 15 drops and gels before I found what suited me.

At Moorfields Eye Hospital in London recently I was informed that the best you can do for the eyes is to shut them. Ha ha.

But there's value in that comment as well... the eyes are the quickest part of the body to heal, and an hour of shut-eye can work wonders.

I have a different more serious condition to yours, so I wear dark glasses. I close my eyes as often as possible. I take a siesta in the afternoon (I'm retired!)... and I use a slew of drops and gels, still working out what does it best for me. We are all dfferent, you may have to experiment.

Also Vit-A-POS is good but may be hard to get off prescription. Moorfields prescribed me CelluVisc followed by Vit-A-POS. I also use Optive and Hylo-Comod (not NHS approved yet).

Any focussed work where we're less likely to blink adds to the problem.... it may just be reading or sewing, not ony the computer screen. So remember to keep blinking. (Yawning, crying and laughing hilariously can also be great remedies!)

Take care,

Light

Yes I am on my phone and computer a lot. I try not to be buts it's hard. Especially since I'm in school and all of my homework is on online. I will try the eye drops you are telling me about. Right now I just use Clear Eyes brand for dry eyes. Thank you for the help. I will let you now if these eye drops work and I will try not to look at screens as much.

I am in the United States.

I have similar symptoms and have uveitis.

you will need to see a doctor if you have this
