severe inner thigh muscle spasms

These severe inner thigh muscle spasms are so excruciating I can hardly stand

This is TLJ53,I didn't get to finish my original post.when I get these severe inner thigh muscle spasms it is so excruciating I end up crying and wish I could pass out.I found that if I take 2 "Leg Cramps with quinine" pills within a couple minutes I'm good for the night. However when this happened this morning I was out of them.I try to ALWAYS have these in the house. This worked every time I've ever did this except once when I had to take 2 more 4 hours later.usually one dose of 2 tablets and its like a miracle after a couple minutes.if anyone knows why these horrible spasms occur or a better remedy I would be so grateful to hear it.(I have not had any weight loss surgery or take any medications.)

How are you taking quinine?  I thought that was removed from the market.  I can't get them from my doctor anymore.  Anyway, I get severe spasms in my inner thighs too, since 1991 actually.  Talk to a physical therapist.  I talked to several before I found one who really seemed to know what it was.  I try to keep my inner thigh muscles stretched.  And before I get out of bed, or roll over in bed, or get up from a nap on the couch I make sure to straighten my legs while pushing my feet outwards.  When I feel that twinge that indicates a spasm is coming on, I sometimes can avoid the spasm with an immediate stretch.  If I don't get it in time, the pain is excruciating and I do cry the whole time.  It seems like they last five to ten minutes.  Sometimes my thigh will be sore for days afterwards.  My therapist called it active insufficiency-muscle contracting while over-shortened.  I sleep in the fetal position and it's hard to believe that the muscles cramp up like that and that I have to stretch to unravel them.  At least that's how I feel about my spasms.  Does any of this sound familar in your case?

The pills I buy are over the counter in a little bitty white bottle and the label says"Leg Cramps"with quinine.Sometimes they are hard to find.Like I said there was only one time that they didn't work great, all the other times within a half hour I'm good for the rest of the night although the pain eases enough to stand it within a few minutes. I've been through a lot of pain in my life and this is the most excruciating pain, unbearable!

I have not figured out anything as far as stretching or anything that helps me one bit.this last one I just tried not to move until it passed.

Hello,TL and fellow sufferers, like everyone in this chat room, desperate to find an answer. I take a daily does of Quinine which doctors don't like giving out but have not found that it's the answer. I am interested in the fact that it works to take them when an attack is on progress. Can you describe just what the packet says is in the tablets please? I would be so grateful.

I'm going to a Physical Therapist now and he is stretching my muscles while he working on my left leg. He can feel when the spasm happens and he stated that the nerves in my back are affecting this(this is what neurologist stated also.

I am going to PT three times a week and doing exercise( mostly specific stretch exercises).

I take ropenierole in the evening and it helps.. But it knocks me out also.

I know what you mean.  When mine starts, I am afraid to move until it passes.  But having gotten these now since 1991, I have realized that it is sleeping with bent legs (fetal) and getting up without straightening out the legs first is what causes mine.

I am out of the leg cramp pills but I'm going to try to find some tomorrow & I will get back to you & tell you what the bottle says.sorry it took me so long to answer

Update:

My doctor ordered Physical therapy & he is doing the exact things you speak of. Yes, the stretching and decompression with some hands on tracfion helps. Exercises at home each day also that are totally stretching that muscle that knots up when not worked on (which causes those horrid spasms. He even rolls a wooden roller on this area to a point I have to close my eyes because it is somewhat painful. He can feel the tightness of the quad muscles(I can also), the spasms, and then the release of those muscles. Indeed this is caused from the nerve that feeds the muscle... And of course that nerve is being punched in the back.

Glad they understand what is happening although the pain still is unbearable.

This is for everybody that's interested,I just came back from the store where I've always bought the leg cramp pills with quinine & the exact brand was now in a box but did not say with quinine.I ask at the pharmacy & they said the only thing that quinine is used for now is to treat Malaria.(Whatever!)It had been months since I bought my last bottle so I guess I won't be getting any more relief from that. One of those bottles probably lasted me over a year give or take.Hopefully I won't get the spasms any more often than I was , but once is too much!

Take a deep breath till your full and release through the mouth. Do this a couple of times. This helps to release cramps and anxiety. It worked for me. Hope it helps you too.

Thank You,I'll definitely try that.

Hello, pleased to say, although nervously, that I have not had an attack in weeks. Leg stretches before bed and more recently, Crampex tablets taken daily.  i do,still get bad calf cramps and sometimes in my feet btut  of course this is nothing like the awful inner thigh ones.

I was wondering about e nerves in the back comment and wondered if we can do anything to help prevent what may be the root cause.

Hope my run of good luck lasts and that you gain relief too.

Are you an athlete? I am and feels like was now a high level Marathon runner. But I recently took a break and suddenly after 3 days I developed the most severe acute muscle pains in both upper legs. Lasts 10-15 minutes and brings me out in sweat and or tears. Eventually they pass. Triggered by even slight movements on occasions. Been searching online for explanation and this is the closest I have come to people with similar experience. Would baclofen work? Quinine always successful? Help!

Yes, quinine always worked for me but I can't get it anymore. No I'm not an athlete.Mine usually happen when I have overdone it that day. (I'm extremely out of shape) Now that I can't get the Leg Cramps with quinine pills I'm starting to think they would have passed anyway.I guess we'll find out if or when I have another one. It's definitely a mystery what causes them or why they occur. It's definitely an excruciating experience, it would be a blessing to pass out from the pain.

I have found some tonic water with quinine in it and drinking some of that before bed seems to help.  Also magnesium is worth a try; it's a muscle relaxer so hopefully, it would help with the spasm.  I very rarely get them during the day but always in the early morning while sleeping.  It's comforting to know other people get them also.....

How are you sleeping when you got the spasms?  I find that I am in the fetal position and start to roll over.  I now make an effort to straighten out my legs and push my feet outwards before I try to move.  Does your start with a 'twinge'?  When I get that twinge, I know I'm in trouble.  But if I can straighten my legs out quick enough I am able to stop the spasm...most of the time.

Lucky you as I have never in 14 years been able,to,stop it. Had it today getting out of bed. Not able to sleep in fetal, position but may be it was the unusual level,of Excercise the day befoer. So horrible.

Thanks to everyone who commented on this horrible problem that we have in common.Actually the last horrible spasm I had was a week or so ago & for the first time it was in the very front of my leg thigh high.It was the same excruciating pain as the inner thigh spasms. I'm not sure about this time but I do know some of the times I had these horrible spasms was when our doggy was laying down by my feet & I couldn't sretch out quite as much as I would like but I know this was not always the case.I've tried the drinking more water among other things & can't seem to find any one thing that causes the spasms or helps them.I do know it is such an excruciating pain that unconsciousness would be a blessing at that moment.
