Severe night cramps in right leg

I have suffered from night cramps for some years, sometimes two or three times in the same leg on the same night leaving me unable to walk properly the next day. The medical people don't seem to know what causes the problem and my doctor tells me that there is little or no reseach being done.Mine got so bad and so painful that I went to a Chinesse doctor about 18 months ago for accupuncture and deep heat treatment, this seems to have worked, but unfortunatly the cramps seem to be returning, small at first but seem to be getting more severe.

I find myself in a dream and either trip or catch my leg on a pertruding object Ithen suddenly wake with severe cramp. I am sat here at my computer with a very tender right leg after a severe cramp this morning.

For thoses lucky people that do not get leg cramps they cannot know how severe the pain can be.

I have experience leg cramps in my left leg, but in the thigh area, and notice most people have them in the calf. I first started noticing them 5 years ago, but they were very infrequent. Last year I had them again, and they seemed to stop, and now I am experiencing them again. Last night, my right foot cramped, and when I went to move to accommodate this, my left thigh violently cramped, so much so, I am still having pain today. I am almost afraid to go to bed in case they start again. Have you since found anything that helps?

I started gettig cramp in my legs whilst on holiday in september. It was so painful i woke up in tears. The friend i was with told me one of the best things to take was tonic water and so every night after that i had a couple of glasses of tonic water. It really worked I believe its the quinine in the tonic water that prevents the cramps.

My father suffered terrible cramp and so when i got home i told him and he has started doing the same and he no longer wakes up with cramp

I read the article regarding sitting at the computer with a painful leg and it did ring alarm bells with me. About 10 yeards ago I suffered a DVT (deep vein thrombosis). This was in my right calf and the pain is similar to a very severe cramp - but whereas cramp pain eventually wears off - this did not. The reason for my DVT - too long sitting at my computer ! Not getting up and moving around sufficiently to promote the cirulation. Everyone blames long haul flights but it can occur whenever circulation is impaired for long periods - just sitting too long without leg elevation, long drives, coach journeys etc. My right leg has never been the same as the valves have been damaged, pain, swelling etc. There has already been a case of a 14 year old having a DVT because he spent too long on computer games. You will not like a DVT. So everyone - get off that computer and MOVE - swim, walk, cycle etc. !
