Schwere Schmerzen, keine Schmerzmittel.

two weeks ago I visited my dentist as I had a bad toothache. He drilled the tooth and provided a temporary filling. He asked me to return in two weeks to review the problem. A few days later I developed severe tooth and jaw ache so I returned to the dentist. He suggested a root canal treatment or extraction, but as I am on a cocktail of drugs due to previous heart problems, including anti coagulants, he decided to refer me for specialist treatment.

Althought I have an appointment in a weeks time, the pain is becoming unbearable. Paracetamol has little effect, and I am unable to take ibuprofen so I called my GP surgery to ask if I could get a prescription for a stronger pain relief medication. However they absolutely refused, as "we don't treat dental problems" and I was advised to see my dentist again. So another trip to the dentist and was advised that he could only prescribe paracetamol! However he did prescribe an antibiotic as he thought I may have an infection.

i find it to be a rather ridiculous situation that neither my GP or dentist can offer adequate pain relief. Meanwhile I have to suffer for another few days before I see the dental specialist. Apparently it's just an assessment appointment, so will probably have to wait again for treatment.

All I want is some pain relief!

Hi,

I sympathise with you wholeheartedly.

I have a problem and I’m not totally sure whether it’s a dental or an ear, nose and throat  problem.

This makes those of us inbetween a Dentist or a Doctor at a distinct disadvantage and it’s rather ridiculous that you are stuck needing painkillers which are denied you because of the gulf between the two specialities.

Are you allowed to take Co-codamol? They are pretty strong and they were very effective for me when I had a dental abscess and a dry socket.

They sell them in chemists without a prescription too.

Good luck and I hope you get a solution to your problem soon.

Kind regards

Jane

Unfortunately the co-codamol leaflet says I should consult my doctor if taking blood thinning medication. As it's Sunday and bank holiday tomorrow, it's going to be a couple of days before I can call the doctor.

After  several hours  the pain has just subsided to a tolerable level. Hopefully the antibiotics are starting to take effect.

I also very much sympathize with you.  Dental pain (as I had a month ago) can be excruciating painful - more than excruciating.

Luckily, I have one Dr. who thinks as I do as far as pain.  Nobody should have to be in so much pain, and I was really suffering.  He prescribed me oxycodone (for a week) which helped enormously.  The problem was filling it.  No major pharmacy chain would fill it because of this or that reason.  It was unbelievable.  My Dr. finally gave me the name of a smaller sized pharmacy that he knew of where I would have no problem filling it.  It was a little out of my way - but I would have done anything.

I was so maddened by my experience.  This is all due to the opiate epidemic and hesitancy to prescribe any pain killers - even if you need them.  I find this inhumane and cruel.  I took it for a week, I could live with the pain, and then I was done with it.

Nobody should have to live with the kind of pain I had (and you probably have).
