Shooting pain attacks in right groin area - female

Thanks for sharing. My pain was minimal compared to your daughter. The X-rays showed some wear and tear on my hip, and the doctor prescribed physical therapy which is helping. I still have to be careful not to put weight on it when I turn. So sorry about what your daughter is going through. Hopefully, 2016 will be much improved . . . totally healed.

I am going through something similar. My pain is on the left side of my groin. My doctor told me that I needed a hip replacement, because he said that the pain in the groin is associated with the hip.I was putting it off as long as I could. I kept telling them that it wasn't my hip that was hurting, but my groin. So, I had a cortisone shot in the hip a month ago &  there was no relief. Now i have another appointment to see what hapens next. Has anyone heard of the psoas muscle? I almost think that it might be the problem.I cannot have a good nights sleep, because of the groin pain. I have had it for almost 5 years & it is really bad now. I keep waking up every half hour with groin pain. Any suggestions?

I'm so relieved to find this thread....

I have almost continual pain in my left groin which continues despite ibuprofen, and also sometimes in bed. My first symptom occured about 11.5 years ago when I was carrying my infant son (I think about 9mths old) and I took a small step to the left. I had a sudden, and extremely painful, sensation that my hip had shifted to the exterior of the socket and then immediately back in again. I nearly dropped my child and I almost fainted from the pain.

Since then, and increasingly, I have had periods where I have hardly been able to walk, but also periods when my symptoms have receeded. At the moment, I walk like a duck because every step is a) painful, and b) a lottery - sometimes, randomly, my hip seems to 'give way' and I almost collapse on the floor.

I have had physio, Mézières technique, chiropractic and now osteopathy (it has gone according to how rich I've been!). I've had x-rays, which show a very small amount of osteo arthritis (I'm 47 and a bit overweight). I also had an injection of anaesthetic into my hip joint to determine whether I needed an MRI; the pain wasn't altered very much, and they decided not to give me the MRI. I've had 3 sets of X-rays done during the past 6 years and all they have shown is that my legs appear to be different lengths, but due to twisting from the sacrum.

I have had trauma to this hip joint: when I was 12, I fell 15ft into a small stream, landing very lady-like on my left hip. I had an enormous bruise, but also I realised when I re-started ballet (which I did between the ages of 6 and 15) that my left leg could no longer rotate outwards as far as it had (eg in the tailor position). Despite stretching out in a number of different ways, I have never been able to get this range of motion back again, and it is also excruciatingly painful. I think that my sacrum was pushed out of line by the landing, and that my body is becoming less able to deal with the twist. The question is, where is the pain coming from?

I have had the impression that by having tighter abdominal muscles, I could alter the pain levels, and I am also now looking into Iliopsoas tendonitis as another possible cause of the pain. Does anyone have any comments on this?

I have now had enough of not being painfree enough to be able to: run, dance, go for hikes (because I never know when my hip joint will seize up), swim (only breaststroke or butterfly because the crawl kick brings on the pain), or even just walk to the bus. And I'm permanently tired, I think due to the stress this brings on, plus the constant need to deal with the pain.

Thanks to this thread, I'll go back to the osteo and to the GP and ask them to think again. Wishing you all a speedy diagnosis and effective treatment...

PS I've just read an article on Slipped Capital Epiphysis and am now feeling a bit glum. I'll have to ask the GP to look into that, too...

You sound so much like myself. The same problem for over 5 years now, but only a lot worse for me now.  I was to see the surgeon yeterday, & he said that according to my exray, I have severe arthritis. He said that I need a hip replacement, but in the meantime i am going to get a viscosupplementation injection. He told me that it conditions/cusions the hip joint area.I'll believe it when I see it. I had tried the cortisone shot, two months ago, but that did not help at all. I had been looking in to the psoas muscle, & I thought that might have been the problem. That might be an option for you to google. That is very interesting reading. I really feel for you, as I was so physically fit, before this pain started.

I've got exactly the same symptoms, which started off as a Herniated Disc and then I started doing physiotherapy the lower back pain went to the hip and then the groin. Sometimes makes  my leg give way when I walk. I have to be very careful. I had a MRI Scan which showed quite a lot of damage to the spine, but now the problem seems concentrated to the groin. It's agony and I've had an X-Ray of the hips, next is an Ultra Sound to see if it can diagnose something. I love travelling and adventure, now my life's on "HOLD" What a nightmare! I'm in Brazil doing a mixture of NHS. & Private. I don't think I've got a Hernia. Otherwise extremely healthy and WAS active , haven't been for seven months , I think I've aged twenty years since this started!  Feel like an old woman.

I have been suffering with this for almost 4 years. I've had X-rays and ultra sound looking for hernia and nothing. ...so scary and frustrating. I walk my dog and work and at the end of the day, I can barely lift my right leg into my truck. I try not to take much pain medication as I'm a mother of two and also work with children, if I do take them it's at night. Feels better upon rest but by the end of the day, my lower back hurts shooting into my groin and down my upper thigh. No clue what's going but I feel so old!

Marla, it's been quite awhile since I posted that and a lot has gone on, but the source of my pain-and yours sounds very familiar to mine-was a hip problem. Come to find out my labrum was torn off down to practically nothing and my hip was barely staying in its socket due to a breaking of the hardware used in a 3 level fusion of my lumbar L3 thru S1. The top left portion popped off and away from the rest of the hardware, pulling away from my right hip enuff that it must have been on the edge of the labrum tearing it away until it was discovered in a CT scan or MRI I don't remember which. I would have that at least checked out. It is kind of like sciatic pain but there is a distinct difference. And don't let them go by just an X-ray. The first doc I saw took X-rays, saw nothing and told me there's nothing to fix. The 2nd doc I saw actually took care of my primary docs hips and he highly recommended him. I saw him, he ordered MRI- that's what it was- even the radiologist that read the MRI said there were 2 tiny areas but they weren't even in an area where standing would bother them. The doc I was referred to thankfully reads his own MRI's he orders and saw the 3 tears immediately and yes that were in weight bearing areas. So he did a. Arthroscope to clean it up and smooth down the tears and first thing he runs into is a pincer lesion. After taking care of that and getting that out of way,the biggest surprise was I had hardly any labrum even left! Most of it is gone. He smoothed down the little there was and til me I will need a hip replacement within 5 yrs. I asked him doubtfully how could he tell that.... And he just said he's had plenty of experience and he's very rarely wrong. That was 3 yrs ago, and I was 50 yrs old! I don't have much time left, and I don't doubt him either. So maybe get it checked just to be safe than sorry. And don't take just an X-ray, and find the best hip doc in your area! Good luck honey!!

Having just read Maureen's post, I had another look for acetabular labrum tears and I reckon this is very close to what I have been experiencing.

Good to know that there are physiotherapy protocols which can help and that there are some doctors who know about this. One more step forward!

Hi Kookywit - I know what you mean about feeling old! I feel as if I walk like my 75 yr old mother-in-law; very depressing! I'm looking into acetabular labrum tears now, following another comment on this thread. Would love to get back into dancing again, but don't yet trust my hip to follow me! Good luck.

I completely understand and it's scary and frusterating. I wish I had advice as I am in the same boat over here in Canada. I've had this off and on for four years. Ultra sound to check for a hernia showed nothing and X-ray was the same. I have yet another appt w gp on the 5th at which time I'm assuming an MRI will be ordered. I am scared as this is extremely debilitating. I as well, have to lift my right leg to cross it or get in and out of my vehicle. My only reprieve is knowing I'm not alone as I often feel that way. Let's keep eachother posted...prayers your way. Marla.

I read all the news and info on Hernias, but personally I've always kept my muscles in very good shape. Still do planks and some stretching exercises, it takes so long to get the exams done. No lumps in armpit , or anywhere else for that matter! Thank God! When I sit for more than a few minutes it becomes impossible to walk normally, the pain is intense and feels as though I'm going rotten in the groin! AGONY! radiates down the thigh muscles  to the knee. Then my knee starts hurting , as though I'm walking differantly or something. I think the general posture is affected by the body's effort to ameliorate the pain. I try to wlak normally with head held high and NOT LIMP!  I suppose I have to stop taking ant-inflammatory before I have the Ultra-Sound. Because inflamtion shows up on it & if you' re taking medication I should think it would be counterproductive. I had ONE day with no pain! What joy! felt like a human being again. I think it was the anti-inflammatory before bed that hepled me sleep well and woke up PAIN FREE! Nice to be able to share one's woes!

Hear ya....i wear a pelvic belt which helps keep my hips and pelvis straight but doesn't help pain. I hate this. I can go months feeling fine and boom. Back with a vengeance. Not fun! Keep in touch! Marla

My symptoms sound very similar, I really feel that we're very lucky to be able to confabulate with others to help us solve our issues. I'm going to look for a Doctor who's more into collaborating with me. I've not been suffering as many years as many of you, so feel rather lucky!

I do get very similar symptoms and I have a hernia under my navel .I  am 68 but still very active and do a lot of physical work,I walk 6 ks every morning and consider myself very fit and healthy so this "thing" is driving me crazy,I really don't trust doctors I bear a history of their mistakes. So I am still hunting for a possible name for my problem and a solution.

My Osteopath found that the sciatic pain I had through my right buttock abd down the leg was being caused by the Psoas muscle pulling on my spine and not other things my Orthopaedic Surgeon kept investigating. By deep tissue massage he managed to get rid of that pain enough that I have stopped taking Gabapentin altogether. Recently I had the sharp pain in my left groin and he says this is the same muscle pulling where it joins the top of the femur. Since treatment it is alot better and intend going for more sessions with him. I find that an ostropath has so much more knowledge of these type of pain which can be treated without drugs or operations. Such a shame our GPs cannot refer patients to them and we then have to pay although if it gets rid of the problem it is worth it!

Sorry was my left buttock and left groin!

Hi you could have SI joint dysfunction. I had mine fused due to chronic pain for 26 years. Nothing ever showed up on scans or xrays. This op did ease my pain slightly but recently I had surgery for a prolapsed bowel and bladder and that had a big improvement on my pain as a prolapse can sit on the sciatic nerve. I didn't really have any symptoms but I felt like something wasn't right. Three Dr's said that there was nothing wrong and I didn't realise it would help with my hip and back pain . I have two kids aged 13 and 15 and looking back, I think I had this problem before I had my kids as my pain started when I was 16. I used to do a lot of lifting with my job and I think that is what caused my prolapse as when I was pregnant they found it hard to scan me because everything was so low so I think the damage was already done. I'm 42 now. It might be worth insisting on a referral to a gynecologist to rule it out. I have had lots of orthopaedic operations and procedures done over the years which I probably didn't need. If you used to lift weights that is a lot of pressure on your insides and sometimes we don't realise the damage it does until it's too late. I hope this helps

Hello! After reading up on all these replies, I've been wondering if anyone has been checked for spinal stenosis, as this causes most (if not all) the symptoms everyone has mentioned. I had an x-ray done and now awaiting the MRI as of course nothing showed up on the x-ray. Spinal stenosis runs in my family and I have experienced every pain and then some that have been mentioned here. I just recently started researching this upper leg pain near my groin that I've recently experienced. It's awful. Any time after I'm sitting I go to stand up it hurts so bad I can't move for awhile! The sciatica I have doesn't help matters. Then just since yesterday I started getting this pain in the center of the upper area of my abdomen, and now I'm thinking gallstones. I figured I would wait until I have about 40 issues (I'm probably at about 36 lol) until seeing a doctor because just like most of these posts, I don't want a bunch of tests run on me just to be sent home telling me I have gas when I KNOW it's way more than that. I've kind of chalked all my symptoms up to the stenosis but until I get an MRI, I'm just in pain!

Hi! After having seen four Orthopedists that looked at the report of my MRI Scan, then without giving me any type of examination they prescibed the drugs that everyone has mentioned, ie. Gabapentin, Arcoxia etc. Codeine, I was then told by one or two, "Oh, HIP pain? You've obviously got Arthritis in the hip" they requested X-Rays of hip , which YES! Showed Arthritis , but not much more difference than two years ago. Then I did an Ulra-Sound of the hip, which showed no inflamation or anything serious. I got sick of them all and went to the best most renowned Orthopedist in Rio De Janeiro, Dr. Deusdeth Nescimento. He took about an hour , was the first to really look at the MRI and said that I DIDN'T have a Herniated Disc, that it WASN'T my hips that were giving me all the pain. YES!! He thinks the Stenosis is IT! He's asked me to do an X-Ray standing on my toes , from the profile and the back. Also another lying down from the side. The last test will be The Neuromiogarphy lombosacral which shows nerve damage and eventually if an intervention is needed. Like widening the canal at the point where the nerve is being squashed. The MRI shows Stenosis , but all the doctors I've seen thought Ihat I had a Herniated Disc and he says "NO!" Since he has no records of having made anyone worse after operating and only operates if ABSOLUTELY necessary I have total confidence in this man. Next week I will try to do both exams, ladies , I'm in Brazil, we have National health & in spite of our problems it seems to work quicker than NHS. But all this is private because I've been in agony for the last ten months and was beginning to think that my life had ended, or I would end it. All my favourite pastimes have been made impossible, travel and the activities I so love put aside in favour of palliative physiotherapy. Now I' am taking a form of Amphetamine for ADHD(is that it?) o give me the energy to exercise a bit and try to go out once in a while. it's working, Called Venvance  , 30mgs. is good , he upped it to 50mgs and I was so revved up at the end of the day I had dark circles under my eyes. SoI split the dose and took it in water. Anyway , I'm hopeful that something will be decided after the results of the last two exams and the pile of money I've spent. I'm taking an anti-inflammatory before bed to help sleep.
