Sigmoid Colon Removal Anyone.

If you have had part / all of your sigmoid colon removed

and live in the UK could you tell me your experience please .

How long to recover , pain afterwards , did it remove your pain,

can you eat normally now .

Sorry for all the questions but it looks like this operation is my

last hope now and I'm really worried about it.

Thanks

I had a resection in July with sigmoid and descending colon removed.  I was in hospital 16 days, longer than expected but I contracted a chest infection and my bowels took a while to get moving.  The operation was planned to use an epidural for control of pain but unfortunately they could not insert the needle.  Pain control was morphine by push button but it made my skin crawl so I could not use that.  The added complications meant it was pretty miserable at times but the NHS staff were brilliant.  Never refuse painkillers because you feel ok, once they wear off you will regret it!

I was was very weak when I came home, on a mushy diet and gradually building up a few steps each day. A few problems with diarrhoea and quite weak.  I drove after 6 weeks, not far and just a stroll round the supermarket but it was great to feel independent.   After three months I felt pretty much back to normal.  It is absolutely wonderful to be pain free and be able to make plans without worrying about being ill. I had been suffering flare ups with antibiotics every couple of months and never felt really well.  For me the operation has been life changing and I only wish I had done it sooner.

Sorry for the late reply . That's great ! Can you eat anything

You like now ?

I'm really struggling to find anything to eat .
