Silent reflux, throat clearing , hoarseness HELP

Hi all

I am starting another new thread in the hope someone has the exact same symtoms and can offer any hope.

My symtoms are constant throat clearing throughout the day and sometimes feel a very slight hoarseness / slightly sore throat and sometimes spirtting white bubbles and the feeling of clogged throat. I've tested positive for high pepsin levels and am using alkaline water , and cutting out certain foods but it doesn't seem to work..im taking lanzaprozile and also gaviscon but symtoms remain :-( ...I'm ok in bed at night but it's the rest of the day ..many on this discusion tend to talk about normal reflux instead of LPR , silent reflux  any advise on this subject welcome...I'm off back to the docs again when I get back of my hols...

I'm constantly thinking about it all day and worried to which isn't helping

look forward to your replies Pete

Pete,  It sounds like you have what we all have here, LPR.  It takes quite a while to get this under control and quite a bit of trial and error as what causes reflux in one person may not cause it in another.  I too, am just fine in bed but the morning seems to be worse for me as far as mucus goes.  I have mine pretty much under control (not much throat clearing or coughing anymore) by following Dr. Jamie Koufman's advice in her book "Dropping Acid...", by adding alkaline water (gargling with it also) and by taking melatonin two hours before bed.  Since links won't get published here, I will message one to you.

Susan

I take lanzaprozile and also gaviscon and have similar symptoms.

If I put my tongue at the back of my throat I find their are white blobs of mucus. I find that my throat feels clogged as well.

have been experiencing a constant acid taste in back of the throat for last 4 weeks. The only thing that has given me slight relief is manuka honey in a cup of chamomile tea.

I must ust be going through 6 cups a day.

I also find find sucking on a. Gaviscon dual action lozenges can help as well.

I too too have changed my diet a lot. It's helped a bit but not too much. Have another doctors appointment this Friday.

What dose of emetic stion did your doctor give you? I take two 15mg in the morning when I get up.

Hi Pete, firstly I am sorry you are suffering so much with silent reflux.  I had been suffering all of your symptoms since the beginning of the year but had no idea what was wrong with me.  I gradually got worse and went to my GP four weeks ago in a right state.  They sent me for an X-ray and ECG which came back negative.  In between receiving test results I was so anxious I went online and googled my symptoms and up popped this forum!!! Life-saving for me!  I returned to the doctor and told him that I felt I had silent reflux (no heartburn) and he then prescibed me Omeprazole 20mg, one to taken in the morning.  I also took Gavison Advance three times a day half an hour after meals.  After a couple of weeks with not much improvement, and by now my husband was also anxious, he had found a Biocera water filter jug which alkalises water.  We tried tap water but had to filter it 3 times to achieve a PH of 8.5 but found bottled, of an original PH of 7.8 only needed to be filtered once.  They are very economical to buy from our leading supermarket at a cost of only £2.40  for 6 x 1.5 litre bottles.  We also bought Litmus strips to test the water until we were sure we reached the correct PH.  So I gave up all fluids and only drank this water and drank a lot!!  After a few more days I returned and saw another GP who sounded my chest and informed me I had a bad chest infection and prescribed me a high dose of Penicillin for a week.  So now I am very confused!!  I have now been taking the antibiotics for 4 days, drinking lots of water, taking my Omprazole, and faithfully taking my Gaviscon Advance.  Along with this, eating three regular meals, cutting out all the foods as recommended on all the websites, especially spicy (which I loved and miss so much!), no alcohol and no tea.  I wanted to try everything as I had to get myself better from this horrible illness.  I am now delighted to say I can finally feel an improvement.  No hoarse voice, no sore lumpy throat, hardly coughing at all, no continuous swallowing which was exhausting me, no foamy spit but still a wee bit of bile which will hopefully soon be gone too.  I have no idea what has helped, maybe just a bit of everything, but I can say I feel the best I have done for months.  Sorry to go on a bit and maybe I am one of the lucky ones, but I just felt I should share my success.  Touch wood that it continues and if not, at least I now know what helps me. Wishing you all the best in your recovery too Pete.

I've never heard of silent reflux.  My symptoms aren't the same, I have episodes of uncontrolable coughing which produces lots of nasal mucus and runny eyes - they last about 10 mins and then I'm fine.  They wake me up in the night and keep my husband awake too.

I'm on omeprezole and ranitidine but they don't help, neither does gaviscon or rennies.  I've had the condition 15 years and as I've never had a coughing fit in front of a medic, no one seems to take it seriously.

Sorry this doesn't help you does it!  I have no answers.

Pete,

Sound like you are miserable. Hope you begin to heal soon.

I  have  mucus in throat, burning up my back, and coughing.

What I am doing is supporting the digestive system to regain balance by:

digestive enymes with meals

probiotic daily

small meals

last meal each day by 6:30pm

sleeping on several pillows

alkaline diet--refined sugars, eggs, dairy, and wheat ALL elimnated

Drinking water after meals and not with meals

I have come to realize that a Permanet lifestyle change is necessary for this NOT to continue or reoccur.

Hi, Spotty

Antibiotics are good, however, they kill the good bacteria as well as the bad bacteria. Be sure to take Probiotic when you finish your treatment.

Hi Susan, I too suffer from LPR that has gone undiagnosed for 4 years. I have read Dr. Koufman's book.  May I ask?, what is the melatonin used for. If you could also message me any info I would greatly appreciate it. I did not react well to the PPI rx'd and I am trying to manage as much as possible with supplements and life changes. It is still a struggle );

Dear Pete,

I do not know if in this forum you can read my posts. I have a hiatal hernia but before I had pain in my stomach, but it went away, NOw I have gone thru a very stressful situation with family, and I do not know if this has made it worse, that now I feel it in my throat. I also have noticed that when I went on my vacation, I just came back, i was feeling better, the throat symptom i didnot feel it that much, and in the evenings I did not feel it at all, BUT coming back, I have them again and most of the day, I am also thinking more about it and the more symptoms, the more stressed. KEEP IN TOUCH/

HUGS i will write more later.

thank you

Hi spotty cat, I've had this since October and it varies from day to day but has been worse since my endoscopy a few weeks ago! I was diagnosed with inflamed oesophagus but like you get no heartburn or acid reflux just this need to clear my throat and some soreness. I'm not sure if they looked at throat which is bothering me. I'm also avoiding spicy food but I already follow low fodmap for food intolerance so finding food to eat us very hard especially if eggs are out too as already avoid wheat dairy fructose and many fruits veg and pulses! Also love socialising at weekends so struggling with no alcohol at all as much as I don't mind in the week it does help me relax at weekends and I enjoy it! So feeling quite low right now at the prospect of holidays and social occasions. I don't think anxiety helps the cough either! I do chew fruit gym which helps x Also I did read anti biotics can help this condition!

Hello: please help me.  Which supermarket did you use for your water/  Many thanks

Dear Pete

Has your condition improved?  As soon as I put my bed on 6 inch blocks at the top and got rid of the extra pillows things began to improve.  I never eat or sdrink after 7pm = 19.00 hours or at least 3 hours+ after eating..I stay up and read or watcch TV if necessary.  I also take a spoonful of honey LAST thing at night which reduces stomach acidity.  Morning I have two glasses of warm water with a teaspoon of lemon juice = 100% alkaline before i do anything.  I have fruit BEFORE any meal and wait 30+ minutes to eat..small amount or a handful of grapes for example.  I eat more meals more often but SMALL MEALS is critical to educate your stomach...Food Combining also Helps!!  I have cut out beer which is highly acidic and all acidi based drinks...fruit juices etc etc..caffeine is also a cause....hope this helps...Granville UK

I have found the tablets Gaviscon strawberry flavour give instant soothing from the stinging sore throat. Also chewing gum especially menthol makes all throat symptoms go away.I'm surprised by this as peppermint tea causes an immediate worsening of symptoms so I expected mint would not work.

Both of geese measures are only temporary but when it's really getting you down it helps.
