Is it okay to sit up in bed with knees bent after op.
As I understood it, yes as long as you do not break the 90 degree rule. Having said that I could only bend the unoperated leg when sitting up in bed, at least initially
You have to stick to the 90 degree rule for the first 6 weeks. Provided you don't break this rule you should be fine. I would recommend using a pillow under your knees so you are not straining anything to keep you in position.

Funny how I don't remember this anymore - I think it was okay - I sat up and read, so yeah, absolutely ... but also that the operated leg felt stiff - don't worry, you will find the position that is most comfortable to you ....
I think it's ok but I wouldn't donut for long periods of time , one of the exercises I was given was to do this with my leg in bed in twos of 10, I am 9 days post op today and still find this very stiff to do so can't imagine sitting in that position x
Hi there
Golly gosh...like Renee it all seems a long time ago!
And yes to bending nees in bed...which I remember worried me too. Some physios say really odd things like about no bath for 3 months, as against me being told 6 weeks, ...but the 90 degree thing does make sense
Good luck
Mic

you are right Paula, a pillow under your knees will make it much more comfortable too -
Hi, one of the exercises I have to do is to lay flat in bed and draw up my heel to me bum so bending the knee. I find it quite comfortable now to lay in bed with both knees bent up and this is two weeks post op. I'm not sure that actually sitting up in bed with knees drawn up is a good idea. Like others have said, as long as you do not bend at the hip more that 90 degrees. A pillow under the operated leg also makes it feel a lot more comfortable.
I could only sleep for the first 2 weeks on my back with my knees up or sat up in bed with my knees up. I checked with physio and she said it was fine.
Good morning ... I asked my PT about the bent knees and she said it was okay to do so ... however (!!), to stretch both legs and keep them stretched is important to lenghten those muscles --- I don't know about you, but the movement of pullin up my legs and stretching them is sort of painful .... seems that the back muscles are shortened and so tight -
To all who answered a big thank you.♥♥♥♥
Thank you♥♥♥
Thank you♥♥♥
Thanks mic.
Thank you tho not sure what you mean by donut.♥
Thanks maggie. I guess I'm in for an eye opener as I have been picturing myself sitting up with laptop watching netflicks. Maybe a good idea to get out of bed and do what ive gotten used to doing in bed.
At this very minute still pre op and sitting up with pillow under knees. Sleeping on my back with pillow under knees too to try to rewire my brain before op.
I just cannot sleep on my back and was sleeping on my side the first night after the op. (unoperated side) As long as your operated leg is supported by a good thick pillow I'm sure you will be fine, just be careful turning over and keep the operated leg well supported with the pillow well up between your legs and down to your knee. There are different opinions on this. The nurse in the hospital told me I had to sleep on my back but the physiotherapist said sleeping on my side would be fine.
