Spinal fracture, severe pain.

Hi everyone,

My elderly mum has just come out of hospital after being admitted a week ago with excruciating pain in her lower back. They did a CT scan and found a small compression fracture, likely to be from Osteoporosis. She also had nerve pain in her right thigh, which has now become numb.
The pain started suddenly two weeks ago, it seems like it may have happened during the night when she turned around in bed because she woke up one morning with the pain.
She’s taking amitriptyline at night and paracetamol during the day, and a low dose of morphine if she really needs it.

She is still in so much pain, she has no appetite and often feels nauseous from the pain.

Has anyone else in this forum experienced horrendous pain after a spinal fracture, and how long did it take before your pain began to ease?

I’m doing my very best to look after her, but it is so horrible to see her in so much pain and not be able to do much to relieve her pain.

Any advice would be gladly appreciated.

I was admitted to hospital in February having fallen backwards onto floor ( stupid thought bed was there!) sustained spinal fractures and advised had old ones( don’t know when happened ) in hospital 10 days - on elbow crutches for about 3-4 weeks post discharge - took painkillers regularly and Dexa scan confirmed osteoporosis. Now on Alendronic acid and vit D. Pain took about 8 weeks to subside - now find 7 mths post injury I do get an ache if on feet too long - especially if stand - but otherwise not too bad. At 73 I suppose it could have been much worse.

I am now trying to come off Omeprazole as have been on it for years ( ancid reflux) and only now realising the impact it can have on bone density! I have suffered severe night leg cramps for years too and am now getting magnesium checked after many years of complaining about it - Omeprazole can cause low magnesium. Definite case here of cure worse than cause!

Think it may just take time for your mums pain to ease. Perhaps when she feels up to it a visit to Physiotgerapist and some exercises given might help although sometimes you are just left with a sore back. Hope this isn’t case and time heals it.
