Starting the perimenopause

Hi ladies. I am looking for some advice and really some reassurance. I am 53 and have just started the peri menopause.

So I had a period at the end of January then not another one until the end of March. Both were normal. Then 2 weeks after that I came on again. Again still very light. I have now come on yet again. I have been on for 5 days now and still I am bleeding heavily. Well when I say heavily I am having to change my superplus tampon every 4 hours. This has been going on for 5 days now and I am still bleeding. Is this noramal or should I be worried. I had a clear smear test in November. Can anyone out there adavi e me please

Hi Debra,

I do indeed think what you're experiencing is normal for perimenopause. I just turned 59 and am still experiencing the exact same things- no periods for 2 months, 3, 5... then I come on. Stop after 3 days, have another...like now I am on day 6. Not very heavy glow but just enough to annoy...and sometimes cramps too.Last pap was clear, thought it was abnormal to still be having periods at my age but doc says I'm normal. My sisters went long and the one under me is 56 and still experiencing irregularities, too.

So you are not alone. Keep a calendar of when you come on, flow, how long and take it to doc next visit. We'll get to the other side soon!!

Debra, yes this can be very normal for this time in life.  Generally speaking we are lacking progesterone at this stage of life, so periods can be irregular, and very odd in length and spacing.  And oddly, it could be your last.  Menopause is always diagnosed 1 full year after the last period.  I think my final year I had three periods.

Take good care of yourself, take a deep breath.  Things will calm down soon.

This was my situation for over a year, periods heavy, 2 days stop, period light, period heavy lasting for weeks / months at a time. I had 2 x uterine biopsies which were all clear. Finally opting for a Mirena coil as I got fed up of having to wear sanitary protection everyday ( I hate to guess how much I spent) . 5 months after having it fitted I have very slight spotting every few weeks & my anxiety is under control. When I read posts like yours & I have read a lot, I always think yes that usual in peri , of course you should never take it for granted so a visit too you doctor can help but stressing is the worse think you can do it can take over your day to day life and can become quite incapacitating if you let it. My advice get some professional reassurance and remember it is supposed to be a natural transition on a womens life.
