HI, I’m back on this forum 4 years post left THR in 2015. All went very well, had sciatica 1 year later but keeping it at bay with stretching. After a bad fall on a 30 mile walk my right hip suddenly took a turn for the worse and now after x-ray it’s bone on bone. I knew it would need doing at some stage but the deterioration has been very rapid. Had steroid injection at the end of July and now I am in agony. Has anyone got a good or bad story about these injections? Thanks in advance for feedback.
I’m sorry to hear about situation, I was wondering other than your bad fall, what caused your hip to be bone on bone especially after only having your THR IN 2015?
I HAD HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY APRIL 30 of this year. I CANNOT TAKE THE INJECTIONS BECAUSE IT DOES ME THE SAME WAY AS YOU DESCRIBED. I AM IN PAIN 85% of the time. IT’s painful to sit down, rise up from the chair , bed. I AM Having severe low back pain and sciatica. i have burning in the groin where i had surgery.
I had 2 injections in my right hip last year, to try to stave off the hip replacement for a while. Both worked quite quickly, but only for a few weeks each. It hurt like mad for a couple of days after the injection. I got a lot more pain relief from seeing an osteopath, to be honest. Some people say they get a few months pain relief from the injections but that wasn’t my experience. Perhaps the deterioration was too bad.
I finally had the THR in June and it’s made a huge difference.
In total over several years I have had about 5-6 steroid injections in my hip, which like yours is bone on bone. the first one was done without those pre “happy pills” and the injection really hurt. But every injection had after that I asked for those anti anxiety pills to take, a few before leaving home and some when i got to the office. the injection is a combination of a steroid and a numbing agent, some sort of “caine”.
In all cases i got relief from pain and stiffness. mostly, great relief, after the first day or 2 of soreness from the injection. These injections are done in a day surgery suite usually by a pain specialist, an orthopedic doctor or an anesthesiologist, with room radiographic capabilities, so the doctor can confirm that the needle in in fact in the joint capsule.
I would do this again in a heartbeat and the relief lasted me about 10-12 months before it became intolerable and I went for another. I know this is only a temporary stop gap to a hip replacement, but if i can carry on almost normally for another length of time I’ll take it.
If I were asked for a suggestion, I would talk to the doctor and see what they say. Did they confirm that the needle was in the joint? remember, this injection can only be done every so many months, I believe they told me 6. and it cannot be done close to a hip replacement surgery.
So after all my blab blab, I did get worthwhile, long lasting relief from these injections, and I would do it again.
Hi Rose my left hip was done in 2015 but the deterioration had already started on the right hip although I had no pain at that point. The pain in the unoperated hip started after the fall but it could be a coincidence.
Maybe not. I was struggling on playing tennis etc with hip pain and an x ray showed “moderate deterioration” - still some gasket left. I had a couple of falls later and the next x ray showed bone to bone.
I have had injections about 6 times it’s expensive and painful for me they have to go under scope guided into the socket works for a while. I just drugged it out to give me more time.

Yes it appears it can change very quickly. Also x-rays not an exact science when evaluating bone degeneration.
Glad you got some relief. My relief lasted 24-48 hours until the anesthetic wore off.
Sounds like it really works for you. I hope you manage to postpone the op for a few more years.
Hi I have had 3 steroid injections in the top of the legs following a THR. I was fine post recovery but the more exercise I took the worse the pain (sciatic) became. The injections helped for a while but the last one was in the Tailbone which really hurt as its a very bony area (on me!) Still hurts but I live in hope.
o yes people don’t mention cortizone flare. yes that lasted about 3 days for me and it takes almost 2 weeks to feel the relief of the injection. hang in there and then if you get a 2nd one a month or 2 later that really kicks the relief in gear. like it needed a wake up call
I was given steroid injections and it made no difference at

yes I had one a year ago and one 3mths ago still recovering both hips are still a bit sore but so much better than before the op I can now walk and do most things with care,the surgeon said both hips were totally worn out, I waited as long as possible but you must be careful not to wait to
Well done. You sound a bit like me. Was walking really well after the op on my left hip in 2015. So much so, was doing a 30 mile charity walk last summer; had a fall and gradually my right hip has deteriorated so much so that its a struggle to walk half a mile. Just waiting for the consultant to recall me and I hope to get the op soon.
Sorry to hear that. Why the injections AFTER the THR?
Hi Hipstor, the only relief I got was straight after the injection. After that it went downhill, so that 8 weeks later I’m in a lot of pain.
