Still feel depressed after 3 years?

Im 17 and was diagnosed with depression in 2013, later that year I was put on 10mg of citalopram, then up to 20mg, then after a year or so that still wasnt helping so i went up to 30mg. Throughout the 3 years I've been through therapy, discharged then went back, then changed therapist then was discharged again. I'm still a mess, i get upset for no reason, constantly stressed, always feel restless and cant stop jiggling my leg, crying more than i like to admit, my head is so foggy i cant pick one thought out from another? Im in my second year of a levels and i need to be able to focus but my mind just wont let me concentrate or recall things, my memory is dreadful, not being abe to remember something that i did yesterday or from the morning. I just dont know what to do? do i up my meds? go back to therapy? just givee up altogether?

im begging for someone to help me figure out a way to beat depression.

Hi Emily - sorry to read of your situation. I was wondering whether perhaps the meds you have been prescribed are not suitable for your condition. There are many anti-depressants out there, and the one you are taking is obviously not working - you should be feeling better not worse.

I would suggest that you see your doctor and ask to be referred for an evaluation with a new psychiatrist. He/she will have a wider knowledge of what meds would be suitable. Tell them everything you are suffering. I am also wondering what underlying causes of your depression there are, and whether a psychologist would be helpful for you. Don't give up Emily. See the doc and get those meds changed. Try and ignore the disappointment you've had thus far - the answer for you is out there. Best of luck to you and congrats on going for your A levels.

Hi Emily

I have been depressed and anxious for 2 Plus years. You can go back to your Dr and explain that the meds your on for so long are not working at all. They can try you on another one, maybe an SNRI like Effexor. Or,you can go to a naturopath and see if they can run some tests to see if you have a thyroid issue, or hormone issues.

I will say, for me, meds didn't work, and actually made me feel worse or not better. I am on nothing now, and though I am not where I want to be, Im better off antidepressants. Not that I am suggesting you do that. But consult your doctor. But don't give up. You can beat this. It's an illness, but highly treatable. You have to talk to your doctor and get help. Sometimes meds don't help, and if you try and ask your doctor to try something else, or taper off. .let your natural brain chemistry come back online. Meds can sometimes keep you from getting better. My last episode, 23 years ago, I took nothing and totally recovered in 18 months. God bless you. Im praying for you

Hey emily im amost 17 and have bad depression, and im sorry your medication isnt working for you. I have zero experience with medication, infact i have not seen a doctor about my depression. Just wondering if u had any advice on talking to people about it.
