coming up to 7 weeks post op and using one crutch to get around still, when i dont use it i still have a limp is this normal !!! my daughter says walk normal i am trying lol !!!
Don't worry, some people still have a limp for longer. I got fed up around the 4 month mark (was still suing a cane part time) and added extra private physio. My PT is very sports minded, and so the exercises were vastly different than what I think are more general ones that we all get from the hospital. He himself is a walking ball of muscle, and informed me that it took about a year for him to be fully recovered from a knee procedure that he had done a few years back.
We all heal at different rates, and I completely understand any frustration, as I thought I'd be way farther along than I was at any given stage, being "only" 50, and having been fairly athletic my whole life! Keep your chin up,
M
hey sont be hard on yourself your body will take time mine took until probably a year until infelt somewhat normal. everyone's situation is different before hand as well i dont think it takes people as long as myself i had a very twisted before.
what i do find still helps is the post op exercises i still so them fairly regularly as part of my exercise routine.
i was 29 when i got it done about 6/7 years later than it should have been it was probably about a few months ago infeel "normal". just keep at it remember your only 7 weeks... most people dont feel like Normal is happening till week 12 :-). i couldn't walk unaided at 7 weeks your doing great :-)
you can also ask for Extra Physio. and walking in the pool really helped me xxx
hugs your doing great xx
oMG im 7weeks post op yesterday and same but im delighted with progress as is my physio......i also had induction at gym with sport physio to build my muscles and yes its a totally different programme to normal. Also intend to start using pool for walking and exercising. think you should be well pleased with your progress when you read some of the horror stories on here.......by the way, what age is your daughter???
I am only just over 4 weeks and walk with a limp unaided. I have been given further muscle strengthening exercises to do on my right leg, but boy I know I am using those affected muscles. We just have to keep doing those exercises and eventually it will come. I was also advised going to a pool and walking exercises there to. But staying in the shallow end or even toddler/baby pool. I guess we just have to keep up with exercises. I hope you get there soon. Oh I also do the warm up exercises that we do we physio at home as well. Take care and remember that even today I was told we all recover differently. Ann
I think it's perfectly normal for most of us! I had just 1 physio appointment at 6 weeks, and the physio showed me how to walk nicely, heel to toe, and sent me home without my crutches. (Can only assume the hospital was running short of them!) I think I still had a slight lump at 10 weeks if I was tired, or not concentrating. I used to find it useful sometimes looking in shop windows as I was walking along! I was told that it could take a about a year to fully get back to normal, and that was true for me. Good luck with your recovery love Judith
hi!!!
ive just read your post and felt i had to reply as i felt exactly the same at your stage if recoverybut im now 21 post first hip and 10 months post second hip and im only JUST feeling anywhere near normal i was 49 and 50 having the replacements and and we forget how major the surgery is we gave gone through as well as trying to hold a normal family life together and get back to work
i finally realized how weak my gluteal muscles were after a physio actually LISTENED to me and assessed my muscle strength after i told her how badly i was still limping ... and this was only 4 months ago!!
she gave me clam exercises to do and i started going to pilates and doing step exercises and i am FINALLY walking without a limp! except when i get tired and then it comes back a bit
so im really saying .... be patient be kind to yourself do your strengthening exercises and i promise it will get better my consultant said it takes 2 years..... he s right
take good care and keep positiveits still early days.....be kind to yourself much love

Hi I am 8 weeks post op today. Had a really good recovery in real terms, off crutches at around 5 weeks and walking well. Prior to my op I thought I had knee problems but now at 8 weeks post op I am of the feeling it was the way I had been walking putting strain on my knees as that seems to have almost disappeared. However l am still limping slightly especially when walking short distances, on camera l look just as l did before my op but striding out on longer distances l walk really well. Its annoying me and my wife even more. ls anyone else having the same problem. lts not pain thats making me limp just habit I think.
Keep using the crutch / stick / cane as long as you have a limp, don't be in too much of a hurry to throw it away. Limping means you still need support to help you walk correctly.
Don't worry I still have a limp to an I got mind done 7 months ago but I have started to see some improvements. let's just keep the faith.
Hi Cazy, there is no rush to get anywhere. listen to your body (or rocketman!!!) It is a long process and you have bad and good days, please be patient. all the best Helen
You are doing brilliantly!
In my experience none of us can rush this part, your body, like mine, will literally take as long as it needs to recover. You muscles are repairing and taking time to knit together properly, so it can't be fast tracked sadly. Your body is unique and it will heal in its own sweet time!! That sweet time is not necessarily on our timetable (or that of others)
Your daughter maybe could look at the you tube video and see what has happened to your poor leg and hip, she may not be in rush to tell you to walk normally after that!! :)
Keep exercising, walking short distances and staying mindful of heel to toe at all times. Try not to walk and talk, but to concentrate on every step. You are learning how to walk again.
See a good physio. They can help you with exercises.
