So forgive me if this doesn't make much sense. I had my thyroid removed may 2015 due to a goiter. I was unmediated prior to surgery. Since surgery the doctors have messed with my meds (levothyroxine) constantly and levels were still above 60. Way above the recommended. I was feeling tired all the time. Not eating, high heart rate 24/7 hair loss and bad nails. This is whilst I was taking the medication. I do not have an endocrinologist as apparently there is no need for one as I have no thyroid. Well after my mind being clouded constantly and always run down I decided to stop taking the meds. I weighed less than 8 stone, 6ft tall and on 150mg levothyroxine. It's been four weeks since I stopped and I'm loosing my hair more, eyes stinging, sweating and generally feeling bad. I'm wondering if this is due to not taking my meds? As I felt great when I first stopped them. Being able to think clearly and clean ect with no problems. Now I'm back to struggling. I don't know what is best to do. Do I wait for my review (week near the 16.10.16). Or do I tell my doctor now. That I have stopped them. I do not want to go into a coma but am unclear on how long that would take anyway. Any advice would be great. Thank you
You should not have just stopped your meds. You have no thyroid and so absolutely no thyroxine will be being made by your body. It sounds as though you were on too much levothyroxine as 150mg is quite a high dose. You need to reinstate at least a small amount. The reason you felt good to start with is because your levels were too high and not taking the levo reduced them so you felt better. But now you have probably gone too far the other way and are suffering from hypothyroidism, hence your new symptoms. Take some of your levothyroxine and book in to see your doctor as soon as you can.
Hi evergreen thank you for your reply. I know I shouldn't of stopped but didn't know what else to do as docs weren't listening. Year and half later and my levels still hadn't come down and they wanted to increase my dose even more. But when they did that before I nearly had a stroke (their words) and being only 32 that was scary I have two children and am a single mum so couldn't risk that.
Hi Michelle, i hope there is s solution your problem soon. I still have yet to be diagnosed but I have all of the symptoms of thyroid issues. This weekend I had the worse stinging eyes and they even swelled up and had the most severe pain when I tried to rinse with water. I almost skipped work today because there was still some stinging although not as bad. How do you treat the stinging or do you think it's the medicine that kept your eyes from stinging previously?
