I had hip replacement 3 weeks ago, ( other one needs doing as well !) but i am struggling to walk with out my walker which i have used for 2 years, i do not feel confident but the physio lady is not very understanding. she seems to think i should be walking outside etc. i am doing all my exercises. and operated leg is better than the one that still needs an op But i am not looking forward to her next visit in 2 weeks. i know its for my own good, BUT !
Veronica,
Why would you expect yo walk unaided after only three weeks. As you have a walker and not sticks I am assuming you are in the US and had the anterior, with the anterior people seem to recover much quicker that posterior but, three weeks? I would not rush walking unaided too quickly as you can do more damage. The physio has probably not had the hip op and cannot know exactly what you are going through.
I am 6 weeks post-op and unable to count the ups add downs. It's a physical and emotional roller coaster and a traumatic surgery. Maybe you can practice finding a way to let her know that her words make you feel uncomfortable and what would really be helpful is support, not criticism. At 3 weeks, and before and after, I gad numerous meltdowns as well. I'm turning another corner at 2 months, but am not going to say "full speed ahead," I know better.
Go easy and speak your truth in a manner that it will be heard.
Hugs to you, Georgette
I am in the uk, and had posteria and epidural.
Agree hugs Veronica. The physio altho meaning probably to spur you on is obviously having the opposite effect. I can understand you wanting to use your Zimmer as it will give you more support and confidence than crutches. And crutches etc aren't that easy to get the hang of. The main thing I think atm is to build your confidence up walking . If it was me I'd go for a very short walk and gradually build it up plus if you can get someone to go with you even better. Good luck x
Hi Veronica, without being rude, how old are you? Suggest you explain your concerns with PT and GP. we all heal at a different pace, I broke my left ankle a few years ago and that was not xrayed for 6 weeks, I struggled on and eventually had an xray, and all the surgeons/consultants were horrified that it was missed, clean break!! After limping around and eventually walking straight, my hip started giving me jip, (opposite side) hence my right hip replacement. Please ask someone to go with you if you feel a little overwhelmed, they can hold your hand and prompt you at least. Do not be bullied
I,M 73, And both my hips were bone on bone, my operated leg is very swollen, and my knee seems to turn in to the other leg.they are different lengths.my husband is very good, but i think he feels i should be better than i am. i was given the stockings, and told i had to wear them for 6 Weeks. i had a home carer coming to change them evert other day, they all said they were too tight. but they were measured in hospital . when the district nurse came to take the clips out she said they are only nessesary if you are bed bound.
If you new hip is working better than the unoperated one, that is fantastically good news, it means it has been a success. Your physio needs retraining in her 'bedside manner' by the sounds of it to me.
Unless she has been through a THR, she knows nothing! I am in touch by FaceyBook with a physio in California who has had a double THR, and she knows what it is like, she is fantastic. The details are in the Online Resources page of my website, the address is in my personal info here ... https://patient.info/forums/profiles/rocketman-sg6uk-907025 and at the bottom of the moderator's "useful resources" page at https://patient.info/forums/discuss/thr-useful-resources-487147
Best wishes

Hi Veronica, you just do what you feel makes you feel better and be safe, the physio isn't you and has not got a clue as to how you feel..I got mine done 5 months ago and at the beginning it was terrible, believe me when i say it does get better and worth it..i am still in some pain but nothing to what it was before i got the operation..Good luck pet .
Take your time. Maybe consider seeing a new physio? At the very least you should feel confident and supported. I changed my physio three times with 1st hip, found tje best physio and now know from experience. Dont feel disheartened. It is a marathon not a sprint.
