Sub-clinical hyperthyroid

Hi I was recently diagnosed with having an overactive thyroid. I have been experiencing fast heart rate and palpitations for 6 months. I went to see a cardiologist, physiologist and finally they did a blood test and the antibodies were present. I never had thyroid problems and back in May/17 when I had my regular check up all my thyroid levels were perfect. I also was taking an iodine supplements for over a year for breast cysts and the doctor said that could have been the reason of my hypertiroid. I stop taking the iodine back in October and they gabe me beta blocker for 6 weeks. However when I had my blood work done in December my TSH was still 0.01. The doctor said to come back again in 2 months. In the meantime I read some books and they all said that L-Carnitine is very helpful for increasing TSH. Can I start taking that without consulting my doctor? I am not taking any medicine right now only vitamin D, Omega 3 and a multi vitamin. I just want to know if any of you experience hypertiroidism by taking too much iodine and also if taking L-Cartinitine could help get my level as back to normal.. Thanks for all your help. This is all new to me and I am just trying to find natural ways to feel better

When you get thyroid tests done, always ask for a copy of your lab test results and then post them to this Board along with the numbers in brackets beside your results.  We can more accurately answer your questions then.  I found for myself that Both Regular L-Carnitine and Acetyl-L-Carnitine helped me raise my TSH when it was less than 0.001 however, I was on a low dose of Methimazole when I added the carnitines.  I don't think by themselves that they would do a lot for Graves patients but are really helpful when combined with prescribed meds.  However, they do seem to control Hashimoto's disease better than prescribed meds.  The other route for natural supplements for hyperthyroidism is Bugleweed, Motherwort and Melissa.  I can email you a site if you are interested in learning more about this.

Hi Linda thanks for your respond I am interested in learning more about natural supplements. My TSH was 0.01 and my T3 and T4 were at the high end of the normal range. The doctor did not prescribed any medicine waiting a couple of month to see if my levels improve. She thinks it could be caused by excess iodine I was taking so it can takes up to 6 months to go back to normal. back in May 2017 all my levels were perfect. I want to k ow of taking the L- Carnitine without medication could help the TSH goes up. Thanks again for your help,
