I have a hiatus hernia, and have junk in my throat and a hourse voice sometimes. Also have sinus probs so hard to tell which is problem. But last night had a huge acid reflux come up burning my throat. This is new. And painful. Today I can barely speak. New to me, so is this like a regular sore throat that will heal in a couple of days? Anyone any suggestions for easing it. Wow, pretty uncomfortable. Now I know what acid reflux really is.
Hello,
The best advise is to ask your GI specialist.
You may have problems with your stomach valve not closing properly or not closing at all. I had problems with the acid reflux damaging my esphogas, because the valve was not closing (GERD). So ask your GI to perform an endoscopy to find out what your problem is. I would suggest to do this as soon as possible, before it gets worse. Not trying to scare you, just help you locate the problem. Because you can ask questions all day long on this site, and everyone has a different theory. Good Luck
Hi Cass73
If you went to your GP and told them about it - medication of Lansolrazole or similar preparation would be prescribed. However, they may refer you for an x-ray at your local hospital as you may have a sliding hiatus hernia. Either way get something done about it professionally.
Kind regards

Clarice, so what did they do about the valve not closing? PPI's , surgery? So did you have to much or to little acid in your stomach? I have mild reflux on my esophogas and throat and I believe is from low stomach acid because PPI's don't work on me.
your symthoms sound like mine i get real fed up, i also find some foods near kill me off, an pain in my stomach an back at times is awful
I had surgery to repair the valve and repair hiatal hernia and removal of scare tissue from a many years ago gallbladder surgery.
ok, thanks. I don't have a hernia but I did have my gallblader removed 6 months ago. I will request the pill test to see if is low or high, but my main problem is chest and breathing heaviness. And sure, pain all around my upper body. ;-(
Hi Cass,
The symptoms you describe of throat problems, hoarse voice and sinus problems can all be attributable to extra-oesophageal reflux (also known as LPR).
Find the chapter on extra-oesophageal reflux in the www DownWithAcid org uk book. You will need to attempt to reduce the reflux.
When excess acid is added to the equation, you experience the burning in your throat. If you experience the burning frequently, you will need to address this by discovering and eliminating your own articular trigger foods and taking acid suppressants so the reflux doesn't cause permanent damage to your oesophagus (Barrett's Oesophagus) which in a few cases can mutate to cancer.
Thanks to all who replied. Will check out the LPR connection. Throat still a bit sore and I am hoarse still. I am amazed at how docs don't seem to listen. saw specialist. Going for endoscopy. Is there anything I should know about this procedure ?
You will normally be offered the choice between sedation and throat spray. With the throat spray only, you'd be free to make your own way home without a prolem but with sedation you'd need someone with you and not to operate machinery (including driving) for 24 hours.
Most people prefer sedation. It's not anaesthetic but you are drowsy and don't remember much if anything about it. Many actually go to sleep.
You will be gowned and lie on your left side on the couch, a bit inserted between your teeth through which the scope is passed which you swallow. If just using the throat spray, you may gag.
It's not a pleasant experience; you need to keep calm and concentrate on your breathing. It's all over fairly quickly. You may gag and definitely burp as the scope is removed and then it's all over.
After a few weeks, you should get the results of any biopsies.
You can say that again, Doctor don't have the time to listen because they book patiens in excess so if someone cancels then they have it covered. Just receintly I changed primary for a 2nd opinion and the first thing the Doctor said when I told him I had breathng problems was " Anxiety" I kindly relied to him that I and my Phychiatrist does not agree with him. Then I told him I was having pain all around my back and ribs and I needed therapy because I get hurt easily when I do exercise and he said no because he does not have my medical recods from the last Doctor which I requested 2 months ago. But then I told him that I just saw my pulmnologist because it feels like I had Asthma and in the past 2 xrays showed hyperinflated lungs which was cleared by my pulmonologiest and a chest CT and he just said he can prescribe COPD medication if I liked. Can you believe that? When it comes to medication they are all (80% of them) fast forward. Then he requested that I check for cancer and refered me to another specialist because I lost 50 pounds the last 2 1/2 years which I clearly stated to him that I'm not eating because of the gastritis/reflux problem and the diet. It's like they are not listening and all they care about is to give you medications. ;-(
Just like Barret said, but I had 4 the last 2 years and within 1 hour after I get out I'm fully awake. In my case I actually like it and I have no problem doing this procedure. Now, The Colonoscopy is another story. ;-)
Thanks to you and others for replying. Question. Told I need someone with me for 24hrs after endoscopy. Think it is 24hrs no driving, or someone with you to go home. Surely not 24 hrs needed. I live alone and don't have room or anyone with that kind of comittment.
it is someone with u for 24 hours, you best speaking about it to them, as when i have mine i will have to stay in my mums for 3 nites in total as diabetic so mum doesnt want me on one with not being able to eat for 24 hours b4 only drinks they have provided
Not really, in 1 hour I was ready to go but if you have to drive they prefer if you have someone with you to do these things. I had 4 done and never had any problem. But for sure you can't go to work.
Hi Cass , I have Hiatal hernia ? I think thats what its called. Anyway I had an endoscopy done ( Doc put tiny camera down my throat & into my stomach . I have had acid reflux for years & would wake up asperating stomach acid . This burned my throat . so now I have Barrets esophogus & need to be checked yearly for pre cancerous polyps. I also take prescription reflux medication daily .
The sedative can reside in your body for upto 24 hours and could be responsible for sudden onset of drowsiness or lack of concentration, which is why they say someone should be with you to make sure you don't do something stupid like walk under a bus. If you are having sedation, you need to tell them if this isn't possible and they may be able to discuss alternatives like staying with a friend overnight.
Cass
If you wake up horse is because of acid coming up in the throat, need to sleep with head of bed elevated at least 6 inches to prevent this, I got an adjustable frame which many mattress stores carry. I had to have surgery because the haital hernia was so large it was affecting many things and had gone 50% into chest. I pray the best for you.
