hi my mum had a full hip replacement on Tuesday after a fall , since she came back from theatre she has not had stockings on, I questioned why not, and was told by a rather rude nurse that my mums consultant does not use them ? I have never heard of this, and am worried about blood clots etc, she is on blood thinning meds, but still. Looking for some reassurance really xx
I didn't have them either. A lot of surgeons don't use them. During and just after surgery they often use special leg pumps - sorry of like an inflatable sock that pumps air pressure up and down. That comes off soon after surgery, and they use either injections or tablets of blood thinners to prevent clots. It's nothing to worry about - it's very common now.
Hi Rachel,
I didn't wear stockings.I had blood thinning meds instead.Depends on the surgeon.
Janet
I didn't have them, I had leg pumps on for a day and a half until one broke...I had a aspirin as my blood thinner. I did have a lot of swelling and I think a stocking would have helped with that. It's up to your surgeon.
Hello lovie , I have heard that some hospitals don't use them at all . I had them and they were so much trouble. If your still worried speak to the consultant or a doctor and ask for advice. She may have been given little foot pump exercises to do ????? If so then it's important to do them but speak to the professionals on the ward about this if you can xx it's a huge operation and a long recovery time , well done you for taking such good care of her xxxx
Hi I didn't have them after my Lthr either like others I had injections and then tablets when sent home . X
I only had them on for 1 day but then got an air bed so they were not required. I never had the blood thinning injections either, I was given Aspirin instead... Each Consultant each hospital do things differently.
Like the physio seems to be post code lottery as to how much you get and when
My dr wanted me to use the hose and also a sequential compression device, the are leg pumps that go around ur calves and press your calves every 20 seconds. Also was on baby aspirin for about a month. I guess depends on dr. Hope all goes well for your mom and she has a speedy recovery!! LD
All surgeons use one, or sometimes more, treatments to prevent DVT's One of these is the use of anticoagulants, either by injection or orally. From what you say the surgeon uses anticoagulants rather than the stockings. I had the injections, was so pleased that I did not have to wear the stockings
Thank you, I didn't realise this, can I ask how many days were you in hospital post op ?
Thank you Janet
thank you, she hasn't had leg pumps either just the meds
thank you for your advice, I would ask the doctor but there never around 😂 Mums been up and walking today so that's a good sign x
thanks thanks for the reply
I think your right there. All hospitals seem to do things differently
thank you very much
yes it seems he does, she's on daily injections At the minute, thank you
I only wore them for a 2 weeks after getting out of hospital as there was no-one to put them back on. I took 150 mg/day aspirin for 6 weeks.
Hi Rachael,
Because you mum is on blood thinners, it is okay to forego the stockings. Just have your mum point her toes and then pull her toes up to keep the swelling moving back towards her heart.
I was hospitalized four days, but everyone heals at different rates.
You mum sure is blessed to have you.
hi rachel,
I hope your mind is at ease now and consider your mother blessed that she doesn't have to wear them ... I have read many a desperate post here about how terribel and evil they are ...-
big warm hug for both of you
