Ive been told to wear my ted socks for 6 weeks but i'm finding them unbearable. I have taken them off for a few hours a couple of times and the releif has been overwhelming it has reduced me to tears in the first couple of weeks, when I was an emotional wreck anyway. I have a week to go. What hurt would it do if I was to done with them now. My knee was quite badly damaged in surgery. It has taken this long for the swelling to go done and the bruising which I dont think the socks helped. Haven't taken them off yet, just would like to know what your opinions are.
Thanks nd big hugs MIchelle x
Oh bless you hollowlegs I took them off after 3 weeks my surgeon told me as long as I was mobile and taking the blood thinners I would be fine x good luck with your recovery xx
Thanks vanessa, I wasn't given any blood thinners or injections only the socks. I am mobile, been walking the streets (lol) and getting further each day. I'm the type of person who always has to be doing something so I'm always on the go, but slower than usual, but on the go all the same. xx
I wouldnt give up on them unless you check and ok it with your surgeon/gp/nurse first.
The risk should be less with your activity level but after THR a post op dvt is sgnificant. Plus the swelling and injury to your knee would increase the risk.
If your female, overweight, on hrt or pill this increases risk of vte as does any diabetes, high bp, heart probs.
Its nearly over and you sound to be going great. Why risk it now.
Keep up the good work you enjoy that new hip 😊
I was a goody 2 shoes and wore mine for the 6 weeks, yes they were blumin annoying and not very comfy. Could I have lived with myself and the consequences if I had got a DVT for the sake of a few weeks - no. Others on the site have different opinions so ultimately it's up to you and what you feel comfortable about. Good luck.
I agree they are awful but you ware them for reason not to get DVT.
I am surprised not on blood thinners I would keep them on 6 weeks will wiz by best to be safe than sorry.

Hi, I was dreading the idea of TED stockings. Particularly in the warmer months. However I had a knee height TED stocking on my unopperated leg before and after surgery. After surgery I had kneeheight wrap around inflatable leg things that inflated and deflated alternately. Blood thinning injections for the first three days and sent hone with blood thinning tablets for a month. Ted Stocking on unopperated leg taken off before discharge.
6 days on I am fine (so far!) just on the tablets.
I don't know if that helps or not? Like you I would have felt desperate in TED stockings. Can you phone the in patient unit you were on. Ours gave us the number and said to come back with any questions.
I think you have been amazing to tolerate them so far.

Thanks for all your comments and advice. Guess I'm just impatient. I will wear them, it's only 1 more week. xxx
You will be given antithrombosis stockings (T.E.D. Socks) and medicines to prevent blood clots and embolisms.
Sorry, it is not advisable to take them off.
But it's might be there are too tight for you.
My advice; go back and let's check the size!
cheers Sam
Hi Hollowlegs,

Sorry you have been suffering so much! Here in the U.S., I was only told to wear them for 2 weeks. And then, I was only told to wear them during the day, which I thought was wrong since during the day I was doing some standing and walking and at night was when I was more immobile. Since they are supposed to help prevent deep vein thrombosis, once you are walking around and active, especially after a couple of weeks, you don't really need them.
I would ditch them, if I were you!
So sorry, your suffering with the ted socks, there are quite a few who struggle with them. I didn't have any, just the injections and was so pleased. But try to carry on with them if they have told you to.
My hubby also had them for daytime only for the first two weeks and Found the. uncomfortable but bearable. Since you're active and nearly at the 6 week mark that you were given you should be fine but if you're unsure you could call your surgeon's office and ask them.
Oh Michelle, I couldn't agree more! They are dreadful and just as bad for my husband trying to get them on! No moisturising as it is even more difficult. Dry, scummy legs. My swelling from knee upwards (Hip) has made it worse around the knee joint and SO uncomfortable. I'm a conformist and following guidelines to the letter. At least the injections are finished! I think you should grin and bear it for another week especially when you think what MIGHT happen. It's only a week. I feel your discomfort!
Hi Michelle, day 17 for me & they keep wrinkling around the ankle & because I have some swelling in my knee they are digging in behind the knee. I rang the hospital a few days ago because initially they said I could take them off for an hour a day but when I spoke to the sister on the ward the other day she said sometimes they can do more harm than good when they wrinkle as they act like a tourniquet around your leg. She said it would be ok for me to take them off for a bit longer so I now remove them in the morning whilst Im moving around more & hubby puts them back on for me before bed. I'm also taking tablets x
After my knee op 2 years ago I only needed to wear them for 2 weeks?
Oh yes, the dreadded TEDS - I had them for 6 weeks Oct/Nov/Dec 2015, then another 6 weeks Jan/Feb 2016 after my failed corrective operation.
They protectyou against DVT, and that can be very nasty or even fatal if it turns into a PE, as as my own father died from that (from a different cause), I decided that for me wearing them was the lesser of the two evils.
Only your consultant knows your history, and your riskof DVT - I would ask him.
Best Wishes
Graham
This is my biggest problem. From day one ive had problems with my knee. It was so swollen and bruised and the socks were digging in, I felt it was prolonging my recovery as I was in more pain with my knee than my hip. It has healed now, I have one tiny bruise remaining along the sock line. But behind the knee is still very sore. xxx
Hi Graham, Ive had a good couple of hours without them and feel so much better. Just needed a break from them I think. They were getting me down. Its only 7 more days. Can't believe im now 5 weeks post op, the time has flown, I'm sure the next 7 will.
Warmest regards
MIchelle x
Hi hollowlegs
I felt they were unbearable as well. So much so that at 5 weeks I ditched them at nightime although the first night I did worry. I felt guilty for going against the rule of 6 weeks so instead I did loads of ankle pumps. I felt that as I was only One week off it wouldn't make that much difference. Weird though i now sometimes wear them after the 6 weeks for a few hours as a support for walking and I think legs feel stronger afterwards.
