Thigh pains connected to hip?

Hi I definitely have arthritis in my right hip and was due to have the op early this year but it got cancelled.  I’m now experiencing pain in the right knee on the same side of my arthritic hip. My gp thinks this arthritis to and I have an X-ray coming up to confirm.  However in the last couple of months I have experienced more or less constant thigh pain on both of my thighs. I think the left hip has deteriated and could also be arthritic now? Do you think this  thigh pain which is more or less like a dull ache constantly is connected to the arthritis?

Hi!

I have a TLHR in late November of 2017. Before that I had constant and extremely painful thigh pain on the left side and occasionally right. I have no arthritis on my right side. The pain on the left was constant at a low level then shooting and was bad at night and when sitting. It almost felt electric. It was misdiagnosed at first as nerve pain as I had nerve damage on that side after a previous op. Painkillers and pain relief gel did help, as did buying a full body pillow. Good news is that the pain disappeared after I had the replacement. Hope you get some relief.

It is possible for this to be more arthritis, also it could just be that you are not walking correctly because of the original right hip arthritis and that would cause these pains too.  The only way to be certain is to x-ray the affected joints, and it sounds like your GP is on the case there.

Make sure that they scan every joint you think may be involved, if necessary contact your GP to make sure that the hospital does check everything in one visit.

Best wishes

Graham

My knee also hurt on the side of the bad hip. As soon as the hip was replaced, the knee pain also went away. It is possible for the other side to hurt if you are walking funny   Best of luck

Hi heather,

Some people only have knee pain when they have hip arthritis so it could be because of your hip.

Hi Heather,

I used to have severe pain in my thigh, knee, down the outside edge of my shin and across the top of the foot that painkillers hardly touched. Plus the grinding pain throughout the actual hip. I was very worried after hip replacement these pains would carry on, and I would not be in a better position. I really struggled with the idea of all that pain being related to the arthritis in the hip. Happily, they all went away! I do get a dull ache in the middle of the thigh at times, usually when I have been sitting for too long, but it's a small price to pay in comparision. Hopefully, this is what is happening to you and it will all be sorted out once you have surgery
