I had an unexpected total hip replacement last Sunday morning 7am. I was home Monday at 4pm. Sunday night, the night of surgery, I noticed my left leg was twitching, the non-surgical side. I figured the nerves must be coming out of surgery. The past two nights Day 6 & 7 post op, my right leg is now twitching a lot at night as I try to sleep. I had a total hip replacement on the right side.
I do the ankle pump, heel slides, apply ice, stand straight up with walker to stretch … lay back down and soon afterward the leg will twitch again. No pain involved. Just bothersome enough that I can’t sleep.
Any experience? What’s the solution if there is one? How long does this last?
its just your muscles and nerves trying to get over what just happened i had it as well woth all my last 3 ops , it will go . Your very early on allow yourself time for all those muscles to heal , don,t over do it …slow and steady wins the race . Im 6 months and still get twinges and sore and achey . 18 mnths im told
good luck
that is annoying my opperated leg did that a lot I would have to get up and walk about to try and stop it, I used a relaxing massage balm, drank camomile tea , a pillow between my knees, it has eased off now after 10 wks. I mentioned it to surgeon and he didn’t comment, changing position in bed helped the best one I found was lying on my stomach, time is a great
Hi Steve,
I had this for months after my surgery, although what i had, i’d probably describe more as spasms. They drove me crazy and some of the twitches/spasms were very painful. It was only after speaking to a nurse that she recommended I try magnesium supplements. Within a day or two of taking these the twitches stopped.
Could be worth a try for you?
All the best
David
hi yes I’ve used magnesium as well for the same reason and it does help. I’ve also taken hydration tablets which helped as well. I found an article on the internet where a physio suggests its dehydration . I only get it occasionally now- 16 weeks - and it’s not as painful at all. I also found once I was able to do more regular exercises that eased it too.
your muscles are in shock as to what’s happened to them but it does get better. I always found if it was that bad either bending my knee or getting up stopped it straightaway.
this is all part of normal healing altho some seem to get it worse than others.
best wishes for your recovery
I had that problem while in bed. The spasms slowly got better and then seem to have disappeared apart from an odd one now and then. It is great when they go away which I am sure yours will soon.
I’ve always taken Magnesium supplements but after this morning I have increased my dose. Thanks for your reply.
