We are currently in a battle with threadworm and quite honestly don’t know where to go next!
We thought our youngest had threadworm due to seeing something in his bowel movement. Having had threadworm in the family twice before I am very familiar with what they look like and just as a precaution the whole family immediately took ovex. This was on the 7th October.
It turns out he didn’t - however 3 days after taking ovex my eldest passed 3 tiny worms in his stool so it appeared we had uncovered a very early infection by chance!
Since this started I have continuously checked bums and stools. After initially seeing the worms 3 days after meds, no other signs or visibility but as a precaution repeated the ovex 2 weeks later on the 21/10/25. My eldest was only one infected.
Again 3 days after the second dose he passed a couple of live adult worms in his stool again. I contacted GP as was now 17 days down the line and still live worms showing in his poo. GP advised 3 days of mebandazole (am/pm) for whole family. Again we all took this and 3 days after first dose of this he passed live worms again. I have seen a couple of dead ones throughout. GP on Friday (after consulting with paediatrics) advised a single dose of Ivermectin and 2 stool samples which we are currently awaiting results for. Since the ivermectin he has continued to pass live works in stool.
To add to this - having been through all this previously (twice!) but due to youngest - this infection does not appear to be cleaning despite meds. I don’t know if it’s the fact we caught it so early or where to go with this now.
To add we follow strict hygiene measures - shower as soon as woken and at night. Washing hands with nail brush on waking, before eating and after toilet. Washing bedding daily on 60 degrees, cleaning all surfaces, door handles. Hoovering bedroom, bed and headboard, pjs and pants in bed.
Has anyone had any experience of this? I check his bum every night and in past month have seen none coming out - only passing in stool. He’s fine within himself. He’s also not a bum scratcher and hasn’t complained of any itching.
GP is awaiting a response from microbiology but I just wondered if anyone has gone through the meds and had no effect or can offer any advice please.
