Three year persistent cough

I got Covid the first round in 2022.( Even after all the vaccines) and coughed violently for 9 months. Still coughing but randomly. Sometimes a little blood. Sort of thick mucous. My Primary Care doctor says COPD after X-ray. My pulmonologist did ct scan and sees lung damage. Never said COPD for certain. Lots of allergies all my life . Doctors prescribed Spiriva but have BPH so afraid to use it because of urinary retention. What to do??

Best to speak to your dr for reassurance.

COPD is an umbrella term that covers a number of lung issues. We can have more than one of them. For example, i have Chronic Bronchitis + Bronchiectasis. The ONLY way that i can get the coughing down to a manageable level is by following the medication regimen set by my lung doc. I cannot describe how much i wish that i’d stuck with the regimen in ‘06, back when it was Advair twice daily plus Duoneb twice daily. I still have to use Advair, but now i do 3 nebulizer meds in sequence twice daily, 2 meds once daily, and finish with 1 med once more at the end of the day.

It is quite likely that had i stuck with the simple routine from ‘06, my lungs might not be as bad as they are now. Also, i should’ve seen a lung doctor with every respiratory event during all those years.

We must take care of our lungs. This means asking questions of lung docs, AND disclosing all health issues to them. So call & ask about the Spiriva-BPH issue. Ask your other specialist, too.
