Hi Am anxious to know the length of time poeple have been in depression Ijust wanbetter.get better

Hi. I started going into depression 6 years ago and, after going to my doctor about 4 months after i first started feeling poorly he put me on medication, I am glad i went as i was also having panic attacks with it. Many times since i have tryed to get of the medication because i feel really good but then i find out i feel good due to the medication so for me its long term but hey ho if it keeps me on top then so be it.

In hindsight, about 30 years, but I didn't know that until about 10 years ago. That means I have 'bad habits' that I've developed over a lifetime blaming other, blaming life, blaming the Universe for episodes that I  thought were isolated and distinct but only last year recognized as forming a long-term pattern.

That insight is going a long way towards feeling that I'm finally getting a grip on this thing.

Hope that offers some perspacrtive.

Hi blackberry. And lauriejane. What meds helped u the best?

I have had it for 30 years.

It varies with some it's only weeks, others it's months and for some it can take as much as a year before there are any real signs of improvement.  You say you want to get better so that is a good start. Have you been to your doctor? If not you need to go.  Only he can determine what sort of depression you are suffering from and prescribe some medication. Everything is a bit hit and miss so what ever you end up taking might not suit you but don't give up. Your efforts will be matched by those of your doctor. Best of Luck and keep us posted.

Hi Lauriejane,

I feel with you. When you are all the way down in that deep dark hole things seem to never end. But they will! I promise!

Depression (for me at least) comes and goes. I've had probably my first short episodes when I was a teenager, but then in my 20s and 30s the episodes got longer and longer. I was finally diagnosed when I was 30 and put on a very common antidepressant. It takes a lot of guts to tell your doctor about depression and that you think you need help, but it's SO WORTH IT!

These last years my episodes usually lasted 6-10 weeks.

The latest episode is just about to go away, since I had to find a new medication combo, because the old one (from 8 years ago) didnt work anymore for me. It's been 6 months. But I am hopeful now and see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I hope this helps you!
