Hello, just wanted to get some suggestions on what may be happening here...
To start, I have regular eructation, and also have trouble digesting broccoli, cabbage, and beans well. I occasionally fall victim to bad digestion and have bouts of diarrhea. However, this past week, I suffered a very bad case of 'whatever it is I have.'
On Thursday, I had Moroccan lentil soup for lunch along with a beano. Then, I had leftovers of ribs, rice and beans for dinner. By the time midnight rolled around, I was an absolute mess, just terrible. I had both diarrhea and vomiting all night. Friday I slept all day (with a few bathroom breaks) and only ate some crackers with some broth because I had no appetite at all. Saturday no more vomiting, just the other end. And yesterday, I did pretty ok and figured I had a stomach bug that had run its course. I made the silly mistake of having pizza for dinner which caused another diarrhea eruption last night til this morning...
Based on your professional opinion, what do you think could be the case here?
Hi, I have quite bad IBS and have recently been put on a low FODMAP diet by my gastroenterologist. Some of your symptoms sound similar to some of those I experience-in particular your reaction to the foods you've listed. Might be worth looking in to a low FODMAP diet and discus with your gp if you feel it may be relevant! Could be totally off base but almost every food you've listed can be difficult for some individuals with IBS to digest, so may be worth doing a bit of research! Hope you're feeling better soon
Before we start I must tell you I am not medically trained and should you decide to try anything that works for me, please speak to your GP first.
I have type 2 diabetes and IBS. My IBS was diagnosed two years ago after a colonoscopy, four X rays and a CT scan at the hospital.
The symptoms you describe a exactly like my IBS if I were to eat cabbage beans or broccoli. For me these would cause bloating pain and diarrhoea.
I find that I must stick to the low FODMAP diet. The foods you eate were high FODMAP foods which means they are full of short chain carbohydrates which are not easily absorbed in your small intestine. They cause water to enter the large intestine leading to gas, bloating and diarrhoea.
When I eat low FODMAP foods everything is fine again.
You should not assume that you have IBS until it is diagnosed by a medical professional but you might like to try the low FODMAP diet and see if it works for you, remember, we are all different but if you keep a food diary you should be able to work out what foods are best avoided.
I hope this communication is of some help to you and wish you a very happy Christmas.
Hi Jen, it seems the FODMAP is the way to go, it's just too complicated to try it by yourself. I am going to see a nutritionist about this soon though I got referred by my GP. In the meantime things that make a difference to me are first of all cutting out onion and garlic, taking a very high dose of probiotics and taking soluble fibre. Also avoiding the legumes and cruciferous vegetables. Though raw cabbage I tolerate a bit, when cooked it's very gassy and lentils I always regret. Though in the end everyone has different intolerances or reactions so best to get guidance from a nutritionist.
