i had my thr in Feb recovered really well (didn't feel like it at the time) back to work as a chef at 5 weeks. I gave up excercises once back at work but I'm experiencing top thigh pain when I get in and out of different cars. Or if I'm too close to the steering wheel. It feels like it's the muscle at the top of my leg going parallel not down , did anyone continue their excercises ????
I also had my thr in Feb. I find if I stop doing the exercises I have muscle pain in various places. Back to exercises, a couple days later, muscle pain gone. I think the exercises stretch muscles in a way that everyday walking, climbing steps etc doesn't.
It's early days for me about seven weeks weight bearing good steady no pain recovery. Walking well no aids still doing exercises to build muscle strength and increase stride length. I will continue till I see no improvement.
Original surgery twenty years ago I did not do any exercises just lots of walking and doing my quite physical job and that worked well, so there you go, take your pick! First surgery I was 55 and this latest one which was the revision I'm 75.
Good luck. Richard
Thanks everyone, can I ask which excercises people are doing ?
Dear Susie
I think from what you have said that I would be doing the following exercises.
Lie on your back and without bending your knee raise your leg to about twelve inches high and hold it there for ten seconds the relax for ten. Continue repeating this and if that is easy increase the time held up. Then bring your leg to a vertical position and hold fir as long as you can comfortably manage, rest for the same amount of time and jeep repeating.
Next whilst standing and holding onto the back if a chair for example lift your leg as high as possible in front of you and hold as long as possible and relax for the same amount if time and keep repeating.
QThen try this one. Still standing take your leg back behind you whilst keeping it straight and rest it on your toes. You should take it back until you really feel the tension on your muscles. Hold for as long as comfortable and relax for the same amount it time and keep repeating.
If you do these exercises I think after a week you will really start to see a lot of improvement. Please let me know how you get on.
Cheers Richard
Thanks for these going to start them now, the ones that Maggie suggested I can do without any problems and are easy no strain at all. I think what your suggesting is perfect as I know I get strain when doing this kind of movement. Will let you know how it goes thank you
Dear Susie
I think that it is important to concentrate on those muscles that are holding your progress back and steadily put them under increasing pressure but never overdo it. Stop if you feel you have. A hot bath is a good way to totally relax them if you do .. We'll it is for me!
Good exercising.
Cheers. Richard
Hi Richard
the excercise I've been doing are really quite basic and I'm wondering if you have any excercise ideas that would help me progress to going up stairs in a ' normal ' way, not just one step, then leg on that step. I want to go up and down stairs properly!!!
Thanks Carol
Dear Carol
I posted to this thread some exercises that I think would help you and I would just include squats. Try to do them at least twice a day and use sticks or crutches when out walking to ensure that you are walking in a balanced way. Check in shop windows to see how you are walking!
Cheers Richard
Thanks Richard. I managed to walk 1.7 miles today. Use one crutch and concentrate on standing straight. Before op, I was stooping and bending over to the right. What a mess! My boys cannot believe how much taller I look! I haven't had any physio but consuly
tant told me to keep up with the walking and just keep doing what I'm doing!
need to sort out those stairs though, leg just doesn't want to stretch to allow normal stair climbing. Will try the squats.
thanks again
Carol
