Total hip replacement

I'm going to make this short and sweet. Surgery in less than 48 hrs, just retired from US Army. Always worked out. Just recently stopped. Pain is too much. Mentally ready for surgery, but still kinda afraid. What should I expect? Anyone!

First of all thank you for your service!! This is a great place to come for information and support as you embark on this mentally and physically challenging journey. I am now 6 months post surgery and feeling pretty good, just came back from the gym where I was able to dribble and shoot the basketball; used treadmill and elliptical and lifted some weights with my legs...it's pretty rough in the beginning but if it all works out definitely worth it, if you have any specific questions this is the place to be. Good luck with your surgery!!

Tee,

Are you having anterior approach?

That is what I had 8 weeks ago. I was amazed that I really did go home 5 hours after surgery. I ate, walked, and climbed steps in hospital. Once my spinal wore off I was in a LOT  of pain but once I got up walking it did subside!

When I got home I only took my pain meds twice, that was the first 2 nights. Other then that I stayed on Tylenol and Ibuprofen as needed.

3 Days with walker, then moved to cane a week. I think you will do great!

Hello Tee1959

Welcome to the hippy site.  You will get a lot of support here.  I think the best thing to look forward to is that the pain you are experiencing now will be gone. It will be replaced temporarily (while you are in recovery) with other pain which is so much more bearable ( I have now had 3 hips done, TLHR then TRHR then had a revisit due to metal on metal of the RHR) and am out and about enjoying life. I know I have to take care and not do anything stupid (jogging, tennis, golf - which may not be the same for other hippies) and enjoy life without hip pain.   Great you are mentally prepared. Do everything they tell you to do at physio after surgery.

All the very best and keep us informed.

Stateside things  are done slightly differently than here.  The pre op pain will disappear immediately after surgery and for me, the pain from the surgery was nothing compared to previous.  I was up and walking with two crutches almost immediately afterwards.  I too was very physically active prior to surgery.  Had to give up cycling a couple of years back due to spinal stenosis.  Just prior to surgery I was swimming an hour a day.  The best advice I can give you is don’t push progress too fast, it will come.  I am 5 weeks out of surgery and walking mostly with a cane now, about a mile a day.  Good luck

Hi

I am now 12 months post op.  I wa really scared and for me op pain afterwards was bad but you know it going to get better.  Every week you will noticr improvement.  You MUST  do your excercises and take your time don't rush it when your body says stop do it and rest.  Being pain free from the hip is great.  We will be waiting for you afterwards good luck

A roller coaster ride recovery.  Some days will be better than others.

It sounds like you're likely to be better prepared than most of us due to your higher level of fitness.

Best wishes
