Trying a new anxiety medicine

I have started therapy for my anxiety, which kicks in mainly in specific situations, rather than all the time, round the clock. I was recently prescribed an SSRI however I stopped taking it due to various side effects, additionally it was simply too much for me. I am trying to figure out if there are any anti anxiety medicines that can be taken as needed, and do not affect heart rate. When medicine slows my heart rate, I tend to get more nervous, so it acts as a cycle. I have the doctor in a few days and we are going to discuss different medications, however I wanted some outside opinions on medicines that specifically do not affect heart rate.

Is your heart rate caused by your Anxiety ?

If your GP has prescribed medications it is advisable to take them.

However you could try Mindfulness Relaxation technique and Breathing  Techniques to control your Anxiety

You can find both on the internet, or your GP may be able to arrange an appointment to explain how you do these suggestions

My anxiety causes various things - including rapid heart rate - like sweating and feelings of choking/airlessness. However, the SSRI I was taking caused my heart rate to be noticeable slower, and it felt like I my heart and breath couldn't keep up with eachother. I was told to stop taking it and that we are going to find a new medication my next appt. I however was wondering if anyone here had any experience with a medication that did not affect their heart rate.

Some medications will slow the heartrate. If you look in the box yor tablets came in yo will find a paper with all the instructions and side effects listed. It may have been your heart rate slowed because you were more relaxed

With some of the medications we take can have various side effects, many side effects happen and are worse in the early days/weeks of taking that drug. We are all different

I have been taking Xanax for a long time. I only take .5mg only when l need it. It works great for me. I also meditate daily . Best wishes to you!

I am on valium atnthe equivalent rate ro your xanax but its not doing it for me . Been four years and its not keeping anxiety and depression in check. I have had seceral failed attempts at anti deps. Ssris, saris. Tricyclics etc. Nothing is working and im feeling i can never recover.

Xanax is mostly for anxiety. I found out by trial and error not to use it any longer than needed. I also take Celexa for depression every day. It took me about 15 years to find a balance I could manage with. Please don’t give up Ann. Keep trying and work with your doctor to find what will work for you. Best wishes for you!
