Last night at 11:00 I got really severe muscle cramps in both my upper thighs. They came and went for over an hour. I was totally in the worst pain ever. My husband tried to help me take a warm bath besides drinking 2 bottles of water The pain would come approx. every 5 seconds It went up into my vagina area and then would stop only to start again. My husband took me to the emergency room. They started an IV giving me valium and electrolytes with potassium. My muscle cramps were getting worse. After 5 hours of them I just wanted to die. The doctor finally came back in and they gave me morphine. The muscle spasms stopped right after. They sent me home with a prescription for muscle relaxants. I hadn't done anything strenuous and I drink plenty of water. It was the worst experience I've ever had. What could have caused this and what can I do to prevent it from happening again?
Hi Roberta, I suffered from this for years in my lower legs, makes me wake up screaming. some things you can do to help
never drink anything that comes in a clear plastic bottle, milk bottles are OK as they are made of different stuff.
Never sit in a parked car, swing your legs out of the door, or get out altogether
Wear socks in bed, not bed socks just the ordinary kind
Never drink whole coffee.
My latest cure I have been following for about 6 weeks and never had cramp once. Take two mugs and into each put 1 teaspoon good quality cider vinegar, half teaspoon honey, I put about an inch of ginger beer to get the taste to my liking. fill the cup with hot water, Have this first thing in the morning. I take a thermus cup of this to bed in case I need it but usually throw it away in the morning as un-needed. The vinegar should begin to lessen night cramps after a minute to a bearable pain and then it goes altogether.
good luck with this, I know how you felt. June
Hello Roberta - there are numerous replies to your question from other sufferers. They have a very supportive interaction which you will find under Upper Thigh Leg Cramps, Leg Cramps, etc., It is so immediate and frightening. Appears that a lot of doctors don't have immediate practical answers, but the public is superb for support and help. Good luck.

I'm not too swift at computer stuff, but the above is where the others interact on this subject too. Lori
hi Roberta22402, i can but imagine the pain of the whole experience. What is the muscle relaxants you are taking and do you find these effective. Had you previously experienced upper thigh cramps? I too suffer from extremely painful thigh cramps and the only way i can deal with these is under the shower with a hand held shower head to concentrate the heat to relax the muscles. makes me cry with the pain. My cramps appear to come in cycles too......have a few weeks of below the knees cramps that can also be painful and some requiring heat treatment with the upper thigh cramps thrown in for good measure in this period of time too. I can not see any reason or work a cycle out - ie not related to activity or food or drink or weather or anything (but obviously something unknown to me). I have been to several specialists with no results.
Hi Jan52884, I've had leg cramps before but never on just the top of my thighs. This pain started at 11:00 at night. It was a sharp pain on the top of my thighs that then went into my pelvis area. It would last a few seconds and then about 5 seconds later it started again. This went on for 5 hours. I went to the emergency room at 1:00Am. of course they took forever to do something. They gave me an IV with valium and electrolytes. This only made them worse. That was about 2:30 in the morning. I was in so much pain I couldn't stand it. My husband was beside himself and kept asking them to do something. The doctor finally came in and gave me morphine. In a matter of minutes the pain went away. Whyat was really weird my thighs never tensed up. It was just the pain inside the thighs. They gave me methocarbamol to take for muscle spasms. I've taken it for the last two days because I ached all over from this. I havn't had anymore problems. My husband thinks there was more to it because he's had leg cramps before but has never seen anything like I had. I hope I never do again.
Hi Roberta, I had suffered with thigh cramps and lower leg cramps for four years, until 2 months ago, when i started to take Magnesium and Calcium tablets, 2 a day plus I started to drink Tonic water, it more or less disappeared straight away, instead of drinking Tonic water all the time I went onto Spring water because it has potassium in but not as much as tonic but it is enough, Between the two it seems to keep the pain at bay, like you and everyone else on here, I too had excrutiating pain, not sure if i spelt that right, I am not a water drinker but have forced myself to drink at least 2 litres a day, it does seem to work, my doctors answer to it was co-codamol 30/500, they didnt touch the pain, hope my info can help you and others
Forgot to say, my cramps were during the day as well as night also kept me a prisoner in my home because i couldnt walk with it at all
Hi Roberta, I too, sometimes suffer from upper leg thigh cramps... I had a minor episode last night. as I write I am applying heat pads to the upper thighs. I hope this will reduce the chances of another episode. i hope we can find remedy soon. I think it may be a case of finding a solution which suits you.
i get cramps in the top of my thighs as well and yes the are very very painful the only thing i take to help relieve or stop these cramps is shwepps tonic water (fizzy water) because the physiotherapist confirmed with me that shwepps tonic water contains a specific drug that u cannot get from any doctor and that is quinine it is just under the name shwepps in little writing, google "quinine" and u will see hope it helps cause it really does help me i drink 3 glasses aday and i make sure i drink one before bed
I sent you a reply to the above email but do not see it, so I will repeat what I said. I suffered from thigh cramps and discovered that I cannot take any of the statin drugs for high cholesterol. Also, another medication I took for HBP had to be stopped as well..............hydrochlorothiazide. Check your medications. One size does not fit all! Best of luck. Those cramps are killers!
Hi Jules
Interesting I stopped my statins because the cramps started when i started to take statins, only problem was they didnt stop even after i stopped taking the statins
I wish I had an answer for you Chrissy but I don't. Maybe a doctor can explain what is going on. For sure I CAN NOT use statins or the other HBP meds I was taking. When I stopped the drugs the cramps stopped. That was enough of a sign for me to eliminate the drugs. Good luck. I feel for you, those cramps can be oh so painful.............Jules
Three months ago I started to take magnesium and calcium tablets also spring water, which has done the trick, I no longer get the cramps and pain anymore, but i still wont take statins again
Hi Roberta, felt the need to reply as your symptoms are identical to mine. As I write, I'm recovering from a bout I had last night. I have a high tollerance to pain but I've never experienced pain like this. It starts in my groin and into my thigh. It's not hard like calf cramps it's inside. Travels right down my leg. Last night it was in both thighs and my two big toes were turned upright.
It comes in waves and just as you think it's easing it starts again. I thought I was going to pass out trying to get out of bed. I've never went to docs but take tonic water and I eat a banana every day. I would like to know if your any further forward with a remedy.
Hi Roberta:I have a cure for your upper thigh leg cramps! I posted it about a year ago and it has worked for me for the past 10 to 20 years.
Every 1 or 2 weeks I take a Calcium -Magnesium vitamin pill.If I forget and get an upper thigh cramp I immediiately chew up a pill and the cramp is relieved within a minute or less. My doctor told me that this is impossible but it has never failed yet!!
IF IT WORKS FOR YOU PLEASE POST ON THE FORUM SO OTHERS WILL KNOW ABOUT THIS!!
Hi Tom, I am going to try your remedy and I will post any results. I am terrified at the thought of another bout like the one I had Fri/Sat morning, so hopefully it works
Roberta, I too get these awful cramps. First time I thought I was having a heart attack. I got out of bed, started feelling sick and then i thought i was going to faint from the pain so i bent over to grab something to stop myself from getting hurt when i fell and immediately the pain stopped. the 2nd time it came, i jumped out of bed and bent over and the pain stopped again. now this is what i do and within seconds i'm okay. i had 5 days of labor and a nerve in my tooth that sent shock waves of pain into my head, i've had 3 major surgeries and non of that compares to the pain of these cramps. i hope this rather strange way of getting rid of the cramps helps. Hello, I find the best way to relieve my thigh cramps is to vigorously rub Ralgex Heat Cream into my thighs. The heat from the cream and the massaging action seems to work for me. I also keep a can of Ralgex spray handy for initial application whilst I hobble for the cream. Beware of overspray hitting your privates as that hurts more. Good luck.
