Urine output 4l per day! Help.

Hi,

I've been posting on this forum for the past 3 days trying to make some sense of the problems I have (PCOS? Hashimoto Thyridism). This one concerns the urinary tract (or maybe it's connected  to the endocrine, adrenal glands etc.): How normal or abnormal it is to have a 4 l urine output per day?

I finished my 24h urine cortisol test this mornig and took my samples (two big "jars) to the lab. I did that 3 years ago and the volume vas 3 l! 

My cortisol results will be back in a week. I'm afraid, that my dotor won't comment on the volume. Last time, she didn't and I keep reading that a normal range is between 400 ml and 2,5 l.

Now I don't drink alcohol, coffee; sodas... Should I be worried? I suffer frm water retention, so I try to drink water during th eday, but I don't overdo it.

You will urinate slightly less than you drink. But volume can vary from day to day. If you average 4 liters of urine per day over a week, then you are drinking 4 liters a day of liquid. I drink about two liters a day of liquid and urinate about a liter a day and a liter at night. There were times when my rhythms must have been off and I urinated very little during the day and so passed about 2 liters at night. The most I ever passed overnight was 2-3/4 liters. The volume of urine is, I believe, strictly a function of how much liquid you take in. It can spike for a day or two, but the average output over time has to be caused by input. Over time, there's no where else it can come from.

Dear Bob, 

thank you for your reply. I drink throughout the day, mostly because I'm thirsty. When I woke up this morning my mouth was dry, so the first thing I did is drink a big glass of water with my thyroid hormones. After that, I sat on my stationary bike and rode for about 45' and drank almost 500 ml of water. Now I had my breakfast (almond milk banana smoothie with bran and flax seeds) and I'm thirsty again.

I'll need to look at why I feel the need to drink that much. Btw, I did my fasting glucose levels a month ago and everything was fine.

Hi Masha,

Have you looked up Diabetes Insipidus? It's a form of diabetes unrelated to glucose levels, but presents with excessive thirst which causes excessive urination. It can be treated with the drug desmopressin.

Hi Bob, 

thanx for your suggestion. I've never heard of it before and I'll look it up and ask my doctor. I really need what the problems are before I start  any treatment. I'll start noting down what and how much I drink.

You've got me really worried because I just finished my 24 hour urine test and peed 9 liters! I am 6'1" 280 lbs. pre diabetic, and have not drank more tham 4 liters worth of fluid in the ladt day. So I am in big trouble I think!

I PASS 5 LITRES A DAY OF URINE, PLEASE BE SO KIND AS TO REPLY WITH RESULTS AND REPORT FROM YOUR 24 HOUR URINE TEST WHEN YOU PASSED 9 LITRES OF URINE?

HAVE YOU REQUIRED ANY TREATMENT AND HOW MUCH TO URINATE AT PRESENT?
