I cath. every alternate day. I seem to get infected very often.I am 74yrs old male.On average I am on antibiotic at least every 2 months.
Pls help. I am afraid of developing antibiotic resistant.
I cath occasionally also, mainly in order to last longer before having to urinate next (to sleep longer or if going out). I have been prescribed a one-a-day prophylactic dose of the antibiotic that works with 'my' identified bacterium. My doctors don't appear to fear a build-up of bacterial resistance and I'd rather risk resistance than have the repeat infections, which I believe are damaging to the kidneys. If the change of medication doesn't improve my post-void residue, I may need surgery.
I'm presuming you are aware of the dangers of causing infection by self-cathing and you take all possible precautions when doing this?
Thanks for reply.I am currently cath. Daily and taking 6 tabs. Of cranbeŕry. It seems to keep the infection down. I am daily monitoring for fever and back pain! Bye.
Don't you think it would be more efficient to see the Mimms medical/ prescription data. Better still speak to your medical practitioner to ask re a longer course of the appropriate antibiotic to eradicate whatever infection you have? Would it not be crucial in any case to sterilize all equipment and I assume you mean a catheter so than an infection does not occur?
Besides what I've said I've never heard of anyone self administering a catheter. In any case did you read my previous post when a nurse said her father had a catheter in for three months that he did not need?
That situation was caused by a urologist who made a mistake!
Self catheterisation is quite a normal practice for those of us at risk of urine retention. They are varations on a single plastic / silicone tube without bag or internal balloon. We insert, void into toilet pan or urinal, and discard every time. Different from nurse-administered Foley catheter with collection bag attached that stays in until balloon is deflated.
That's interesting.... I was told by one doctor who got my diagnosis wrong but was a very nice chap....... some folks just have a sensitive bladder and the inside of a bladder isn't smooth you know.
I said I don't know if mines smooth or wrinkly but I do know there is something wrong with it because I have to get up to pee a couple of times in the middle of the night and I never have to do that although I realize I am getting older and anything can go wrong I feel as if I have some kind of infection.
That was 2010 and in the next 7 years I saw umpteen GPs and several so called specialists but none of them looked at my past medical history - not one of them......
Although I eradicated my infection with two months of antibiotics the Urologist I saw the most of had the cheek to tell me I could not prove I had had an infection. He was incorrect on that one because I own a report that categorically stated that I had a previous tubercular infection but he was too self assured to look at that letter as I had done..... pompous twit.
