I know I have vaginal atrophy. I'm using vagifem regularly but even with additional lubrication penetrative sex hurts. It hurts enough for me to want to give up sex altogether. I'm only 55 and don't want to do this, but I don't want to continue with this pain (like pulling off a plaster on a hairy limb). My gynea wants me to have a vulva biopsy but I've turned this down since I don't have any swellings, or problems outside my vagina. I've heard of the mona lisa treatment and wonder if this might be an option for me. Is there anything else I can try. I've also read I should do sex more frequently to 'ease the pain' but that just seems mediaeval and sexist. I'm due to finish my tamoxifen in 13 months time. Do you think this atrophy will clear up after that?
I had no idea this was of the menopause situation. I am experiencing the same thing and I'm finding it very difficult as my husband and I always enjoyed an active sex life.
Mary,
So sorry you are experiencing this. What I can tell you is that vaginal atrophy and dryness is very common with menopause. And while many sources quote that only about 50% of the woman experience it, most authorities say it is under reported and the percentages are much higher. You are not alone. It's amazing when you ask your friends and family, to see how often this occurs. I haven't talked to anyone who hasn't had painful sex, and vaginal dryness.
Typically, this problem does not correct unless you have treatment. Possible the vagifem isn't enough? Or another form of estradiol might help. I used vaginal Estrace which was very effective, however i did have some strange side effects with my hair. I also have had experience using patches, and once the estrogen level in my body came back up, the vaginal atrophy and dryness completely went away. I also have a friend who is using Oesphenia, and she feels it works very well.
Please don't stop trying to find a solution that works for you. This can/will continue to get worse. I have friends whose tissue will tear and bleed with intercourse, as they left it untreated. Pretty unfair, isn't it, that we have to endure these wonderful symptoms.
Thank you so much for all the info. This site is being so helpful
