Walking when fully weight bearing, advice please

Hi everyone, I had a complex THR with bone graft just over 4 weeks ago. I'm none weight bearing for 6 weeks, then partial (toe touch) weight bearing for another 6 weeks. The Physio i spoke to in hospital said because I'm relatively young (45) and quite fit I should be probably looking at 4 weeks of recovery once fully weight bearing.

I've only just started to wonder what this will involve, I presume I'll be on crutches for a little while but as my hip will be healed will I take as long to recover as anyone else starting to walk after a new hip or wonder if it will be quicker? I know my op leg muscles will be weak and I've now got a longer leg (almost the length it should be) to deal with.

My friend is encouraging me to take a holiday to recuperate. It will be about 2 weeks after I start fully weight bearing. I'm also aware I'll be having Physio then but don't yet know how often. Would love to go away!! We'll only be relaxing!

Any advice would be appreciated

Vicki

My op was a simple THR so was Wight bearing from day 1. By 6 weeks I was walking either with a stick or one crutch. Went on a cruise at 7.5 weeks, so depending what your holiday involves, enjoy and be careful

I was fully weight bearing from day one, but with no other problems at that stage.

By 4 weeks I was walking 1.5 miles, so you should be fine as you will be more advanced than I was at the start.

Hope you enjoy your holiday.🚢😊

Thanks, will start doing some planning! Already have plans to go away with hubby in April too, might as well make the most of it before going back to work!

Hope you bearing up ok after your op, any idea yet on your long term recovery? Are they going to leave you alone now?

Vicki

Thanks Maggie, I'll be careful, won't be taking my heels!

Looks like I am stuck with it as it is - as they cannot move it. What happens if it wears out, I hate to think 😭

I'm the same as you, none weight bearing for six weeks, partial for six weeks.  At week nine now so am looking forward to losing the crutches in three weeks, one at a time.  I believe it will only be a couple of weeks before  I'm off crutches though it may take months of physio before I walk properly due to me walking on my toes for years,  I'm 56 and reasonably fit.  I make sure I have a good long walk each day and increase my exercises ,  repetitions.  I think it's just building up muscles.

I'm sure they can do something if that happens. My cup was retroverted, it showed on a CT scan. The surgery I had when I was little was a mess and apparently it was very difficult to dislocatee. My consultant specialises in problems like this and also the difficult trauma cases. He thinks I'll need 2 or 3 revisions in the future depending on how active I am and how long I live!

Hope it doesn't stop you doing things you like to do. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Vicki

Finally someone with the same as me!! How did your leg feel when you started to weight bear a little? I had a raise in my shoe prior to the op, but only used it at work or the gym. I limped and stood on my tiptoes on my op leg and it feels strange now it's longer again! Would love to keep up with your recovery as I'm not sure what to expect.

Hi Vicki, seems to me that recovery times are as unpredictable as the weather, never as everyone says hope you are one of the lucky ones and it is quick. I am at nine weeks walking with no support bending to the ground putting on my own shoes. Surgeon said at 9 weeks ok back to normal and 90 degrees finished. Still have off days where sore and very stiff especially when i have been sitting for any length of time. Good luck lyn68075

Hi Kevin I am 72 years old and was weight bearing straight away one crutch at 3 weeks walking stick at 5. 9 weeks and no support for 2 weeks still grab the stick every now and then because it gets sore if i sit for too long, plus have a groin problem, and ended up with a clot in the calf muscle of surgery leg. Did every thing by the book never can tell can you. Lisyening to a lot of the people on this forum i am not going to winge again as there are a heck of a lot of people much worse off than me.

All the best lyn68075

To be honest. I've hardly any pain, the only discomfort I've had from day one was due to swelling and a tight feeling in my leg.  That's pretty much gone apart from my ankle now, which doesn't seem to be lessening at the moment.   I'm just frustrated that I can't lose the crutches just yet as I'm raring to get back to normal- or better than normal.  To be honest I've occasionally forgotten my crutches and walked the length of the room before I've realised.  I'm trying to do it all by the book, I've come this far I don't want to ruin anything by my impatience.   Just three more weeks   I keep reminding myself.

Thanks Lyn, sounds like you e worked hard and now doing well. 9 weeks isn't really that long when you consider the surgery we have had.
