Wanting advice on treatment for an overactive thyroid

Hey 👋🏽

About a week ago I got my blood test results back and have an overactive thyroid ( like I didn’t know , I’ve only been testing for over a year 😓 ) anyway .. I have to wait exactly one month from when I got the test to get another one to see if it has slowed down or still the same. If it is still the same I start treatment, if it has slowed down then nothing. But I’m wanting advice on the treatment of anyone else has been on it. I’ve been reading and the medication all seem just stop your body from actually producing those hormones other then actually help the issues. As it has given me problems to conceive I really want it fixed. The other thing I have read was radiation by an x-ray , that’s kills the abnormal cells.

Any advice or your own story is much appreciated

Hi tanika96, without additional information, for example, a thyroid function test or other blood test results it is difficult to give any specific advice.

Regarding treatment involving radiation, you are most likely talking about a thyroid ablation using radioactive Iodine I-131. This radiosurgery method uses beta rays to kill cells that absorb Iodine.

In very special conditions, for example, if the patient has an overactive (hot) thyroid nodule, Iodine-131 can be used to target the thyroid nodule. Otherwise, the whole thyroid is targeted and the result is an atrophied thyroid gland that (hopefully) produces just enough thyroid hormones. In practice, many patients become permanently hypothyroid and have to take thyroid hormone supplements for life.

Also, should you have treatment involving radionuclides then it is recommended to wait for at least 6 months before trying to conceive.

In general, thyroid surgery or ablation is mostly considered as a last resort option if the patient does not respond well to anti-thyroid drugs, has had several episodes of hyperthyroidism in the past, or has developed a (large) goitre.

Best of luck, hopefully, your thyroid level normalise and you will not need any treatment.
