Does anyone know - does a stainless steel/ ceramic head prosthesis weigh more or less than the bone it replaces?

That is a great question. I have been wondering how much weight has been added to my body with double hip replacements and doing fine but weighing more!
Hi Damaris,
I asked the same question after my operation a year ago in the hope it would be an excuse for putting on weight, but no, the general opinion was that the weights was the same.
That is a great question, I am certainly going to ask my surgeon.
The parts weigh about three to five pounds. The bone your surgeon removes during hip replacement weighs a little less, so you may be a bit heavier.
i was told the same
I am allergic to metal, and I therefore had a titanium covered in ceramic (to make sure!). I was told it does weigh more! ![]()
I asked my surgeon and he said its pretty much the same weight as the bone it replaces. titanium is pretty light as metals go.
Thanks everyone
Hello damaris.m,
My replaced hip is definitely heavier, when in pilates I can feel the difference when lifting the legs.
metal stem weighs more than the bone marrow thats drilled out. metal ball weighs more than the bone. the cup weighs more than the socket that was cleaned out . wouldnt be surprised if you weigh 2-3 pounds more.
