Hello,
this isnt exactly a severe problem but an annoying one nevertheless:
I always have to cough when i smell a strong scent and i have no idea why.
This is caused by all kinds of scents and not just for example limited to certain kinds of food: Deodorants, Mayonnaise, spicy foods, really anything that has an particularly strong smell. I immediately get a tingling sensation in my lower throat, roughly in the area where the thyroid gland is located, and have to cough.
I dont smoke (but grew up with parents that smoked) and dont have any other throat related issues.
Does anybody have any idea what this could be? I cant simply accept that this is just some kind of quirk my body has and it leads to awkward situations on a regular basis, when you just can stop coughing every few seconds because of the scent of the food in the restaurant youre visiting.
Strong smells have the same affect on me, particularly chemical smells. I think it is because the lungs have odour receptors which can cause the irritation. probably most people have the problem. I have never really thought about it before.
Hi, I can understand your concerns, I have the same problems, but even change of air, from a door opening more people in same room than used to, temperature.
I posted my problems some time back, as I am at the end of my tether, with it.
I'm now banking on the Wythenshawe Cough Clinic research team to come up with some thing to help to get my life back.
Hey ptolemy,
I do think that it is affecting me more than the average person. I know that I didnt have to cough as often a few years ago. It doesent have to be a >very< strong smell.
Im sorry to hear that you are suffering from a similar problem. Especially because it sounds much more severe in your case. For me its simply an annoyance.
I hope that the research team will be able to help you!
