I am 9 days post op after having both feet done. My legs are getting really weak from not walking and I can feel the pounds piling on. Can anyone give me any tips on how to exercise whilst on the sofa? I get up for five minutes most hours for a little walk but that is it. The boredom is making food really tempting. HELP
wow u r in the thick of it. Hang in there it will pass. Eating is a good thing my doc said u need 2400 calories a day to heal properly and quickly. I drink Boost a protein drink. Eat All the right foods. Of course chocolate always fixes everything. There's nothing better than inhaling a Hershey's chocolate bar occasionally.Theres videos online for exercises for the people in with limited mobility just do a google..
Or ask UR dr to ask PT TO SEND U SOME PRINT OUTs THEY HAVE & CAN EMAIL TO U.
OPPS FORGOT TO TAKE THE CAPS off again.. Sorry....not yelling. Mabe a bit blind but not raising my voice.
Cheer up or they will send the little men in white coates to carry u away, he he ha ha hoho..he he... I know music is good, listening to UR fav tunes helps me and drink a lot of water to stave of hungar and munching.. I also look for mini series to watch I can order on tv. I keep a bowl of grapes near by to munch on . Healthy snacks ...
afraid you won't be doing any walking for at least 6 weeks and then only after x rays show the bones have healed well. Tying to do too much too soon will only cause the feet to swell. As far as exercises are concerned you could try using gym bands. You can give your upper body a work out with them. Also you can work on your leg muscles lying on your back or sitting down. Do not however put any pressure on the toe joiint. After. 6 weeks inactivity I found that my calf muscles were aching once I started walking. Then it was my back. I am however very active and now have no major problems. I am about 20 weeks post op. As far as boredom is concerned good books and Netflix worked for me. Good luck with your recovery.
Deni, this sounds familiar, I did gain some weight, about 1kg but thats ok, I just enjoyed the chocolate. I did combine that with exercise though. If you are reasonably fit and exercise normally then you can do some exercises which do not impact your feet. You can work out your own but for the first couple of weeks I did the cheat press ups, ie do press ups on the floor but from your knees, not your toes, these are less strenuous than normal I was doing about 50 a session, do those every day. Also do sit ups, or curls depending again on your fitness. Plank can be done too (again from knees, not on toes!). After a few weeks I started squats without any weights but nothing like lunges for 4 months. Your legs will lose a little muscle mass but they will soon get it back. I found these helped me stay sane and feeling I was keeping on top of my fitness. Good luck.
I am relieved about the calories as I don't think I'm eating too much now. I thought I needed to keep them really Lowe because of the inactivity. I'm already a little overweight and was worried. Daytime TV and box sets are my constant companion
My knees are not great but have quite strong legs other than that and so will work on some leg raises and sit ups. It's so nice to get the motivation from all these lovely replies!
One thing that helped me now seven weeks post op was to put a mat on the floor right below where I was sitting on the couch. I would crawl to the floor and do Pilates exercises, arms w weights, etc
This is a difficult process for active people like us who are pretty much always moving. Everyone is different. For me I was able to do ab crunches, seated dumbell curls, womans knee pushups thriughout my whole recovery. I am not recommending it, that's what worked best for me. Also I found not eating so much was the answer to gaining weight. I gained 10 - 13 pounds. The best suggestion is a full surrender, eat well, get your rest and believe it will get better. Good luck. Great place around here.
I did give in today and ate what I fancied and have felt better for it, but will be more sensible tomorrow. Will get hubby to buy in some low calorie snacks. Am just improving with exercises and have found the crutches can be good for all kind of arm exercises.
How long ago did you have your op? Also did you lose the weight and if so how quickly?
Had first op March 29th and was back in the gym doing stationary bike and eliptical for an hour after 6-7 weeks. My second operation was May 19th and became infected after two weeks, the day after I had my stitches out. Monday I will be have 1st phase of artificial graph. July 24th I will be having a free flap surgery to fill in my open wound that has not healed in which will require a 6-7 day hospital stay. One of my gifts that I am blessed with is the ability to lose weight even tho it gets more difficult at 55. I will be determined to get back in shape ASAP and so can you.
Had both my bunions removed plus bilateral hammer toes correction on Wednesday 9th July 2014. So day 3 for me today. My feet are very swollen & painful plus the boredom is getting to me & found this web site which is great for information & to hear & share others experiences. I am also concerned about weight gain as only came back from holiday last weekend & have a husband who is being very kind by feeding me - oh dear I'm going to be the size of a house. But feeling a little fed up & good food helps at Keats I can't have any wine due to the painkillers.
Like you I am a little bit concerned about the weight gain but moderation seems to be the key. Your body needs energy to recover and now isn't the time to make yourself even more miserable because of hunger. I'm eating more fruit than I usually would and find popcorn is a great low calorie snack as it feels like you are eating more than you are. I have cut down on portion sizes as I find little and often works better for me. Hubby deserves a medal for all the cooking and cleaning he as done. One last snacking tip: dark chocolate and raisins. Lower in calories and rich so you don't want to eat too much. The raisins help. Not sure I spelt that right - but you know what I mean
Wow Bob! Sound like you have been on a bit of a journey with this and still have a little way to go. Your positivity is a credit to you and I hope it will help you through the next stage too. You are certainly inspiring me and I am sure others too. Thanks!
