What type of anaesthesia did you have, did you have a choice ?

I had general and had no problems afterwards. My neighbor had the same doctor, same operation one week later and had a spinal and also had no problems. She did say she thought she was a little bit aware during the operation, but it didn't seem to cause her any problem. I have no idea why she got the spinal and I had the general, but we both did well.

I was given a spinal with sedation. I did not want a GA so was happy with the spinal, no problem at all. No pain after operation, no pain since.

I had a spinal without sedation. Worked very well. For another op I was put down for a general and asked for a spinal and they were quite happy to change.

I was terrified about the thought of having a spinal with sedation, and was down for a general anaesthetic. At the last minute the anaesthetist said everyone he'd given a spinal for their first hip replacement asked for it again the second time. That changed my mind. It was an excellent decision and one which I would repeat (although I hope I don't need a second replacement). Joan

For my first op i had a spinal with sedation and didnt know a thing all went well until i had been at a day then i had the most horrendous pain in my head and the GP had to come out and give me an injection,i was told that sometime the anesthetic can can get into the blood stream and cause the head pain so when i had my next replacement they advised a general because if it happened again it could be worse.

I has spinal with my first and defo having same again with 2nd.

I chose to have general and I am happy I did. I lost a bit more blood than expected and I was the last patient so I stayed the night in the hospital. In fact, I stayed 2 nights because the blood loss made me dizzy and I couldn't complete walking up the stairs the first day.

I had my op yesterday afternoon and had a spinal with sedation. Didn't feel or hear a thing . Fairly painful now but a different kind of pain. Feeling very tired now

brilliant. glad everything went well I cannot remember having any pain after but with my 1st one I was in severe pain before op. onward and upwards now...

Hi Dale, great news you finally got your op. Pain will soon abate, spinal always the best bet, less side effects. Are you back home yet? Hope you feel more like your old self soon, it's upwards from here and you will feel better, keep up with the exercises. Best wishes

Yes, I got home this morning. Just trying to adapt to the home life which is not easy but we'll get there I'm sure.

hopefully if all goes well with recovery, you will feel grand in about 3 weeks, ups and downs to come, I broke my 10000 step last week with just a walking stick to keep folk away, I don't really need it but it makes me feel more stable. Get one from Amazon or such like, collapsible, to chuck in rucksack or something if you don't need it. Home is best place for you, do you have walk in shower? if so, you will be made up. Go well x

I'm actually cruising around the flat without any walking aids at all. I have 2 sticks from the hospital but I guess I'll only need 1 for outdoors. I've had to use a walking aid since September last year so I have a couple of collapsible sticks in the car. We put in a new kitchen and en suite last year and made them both disabled friendly as I knew this was coming. The walk in shower is my favourite at the moment!! Cant wait to do 10000 + steps again and it looks like the weather is improving up here at last.

i had my op last week with a spinal and sedation. slept through it all! Marvellous. I was dreading the spinal injection but it was fine. went privately in the end because of the long wait for NHS due to Covid. I'm now home with exercises from physio. couldnt fault the care. My wound is very sore and don't get dressing removed til next week. getting in and out of bed is not easy. Did anyone else find this? I use one or two sticks in the house but definitely two aafter tomorrow when my isolation ends and i can go out. Can't wait. After weeks in a wheelchair due to horrific pain (I could feel and hear my bones grinding together) Will be lovely to be back on my feet.

I had my op last Thursday, also done privately and couldn't fault the care. My wound is fine, I had the dressing (waterproof) changed on Sunday before I got home, clips/staples come out a week tomorrow. I wasn't told to isolate but feel it's appropriate 'til the clips come out.

ooh the bum pain, not pleasant!! It does get easier. Lucky with mine for both hips, no staples, clips or stitches to be removed. Make certain you walk with both crutches, generally until you see or speak to surgeon at check up, I know some like to discard them ASAP, (mentioning no names Ptolemy !!) but you will get a much better gait and heel toe action if you stick with them, in fact some report that the surgeon has told them off for showing up at appointments without 2 crutches. Enjoy your new freedom
