I will be 10 weeks post op this coming MOnday. I had THR on right side, anterior. All went well. I have been swimming laps, treadmill at gym, walking up to 2 miles and leg workouts that my PT gave me to do at gym as well since week 8. Walking well, been back at work since week 4. I tried to get back on my road bicycle (men's frame) and couldnt get my right leg over, so went to other side and put left leg over but couldnt get left leg back over bike without laying bike down halfway. Guessing getting back on my horse is going to be a struggle now as well. When will things get back to normal and I can actually ride again. I am getting so impatient with all of this and it gets depressing knowing summer will be over and I am so limited it feels in what I can participate in. 1st time in 6 years I have to miss participating in my towns triathlon (just a smaller version one). Guess I wasnt prepared for how long this healing process actually takes.
Wow you sound like you are recovering well I am 3weeks post op and don't use crutches around the home but still use 2 outside the home.
Reading your post I will consider swimming now and visiting the gym
I’m at 9 months. THR. Anterior. There are times when I move a certain way that I feel it’s tight. When that happens, I stop and try to recreate that movement and push again in the same direction, but even further slowly. It helps. Just keep it up. It will get better.
Believe it or not I was on the stationary bike at the gym 2 hours after hospital discharge.
Hi there, you are lucky as I had a last minute minimally invasive posterior approach. My surgeon won't let me go on my cross trainer for 3 months. I am 7 weeks post op and am not allowed to bend either! All I do is walk so am watching my muscles disappear and weight go on! I've rationalised this by saying - sort hip 1st , then tone up and lose weight. Perhaps you should do the same?
The stationary bike has never been a problem! I have a tall mens frame bike that you have to lift your leg pretty high to get over, so its quite the struggle!! Not very forgiving! Peddling is no issue, just getting my leg over!
Yes I can understand. I had THR June 5, 2018 and it is like I am on a roller coaster ride. Still sore and suffering depression as well. Perhaps I am too impatient. Nothing is normal about this. We all heal differently and that is what I focus on. At first I thought I was the only one going thru' pain and frustration. Turns out we aren't alone. This gives me hope.
I think you are doing great at 10 weeks. I believe I was released from most restrictions at 12 weeks. Maybe borrow a bike w a lower mid frame so it is easier to get on and off. That is a weird motion, bringing your right leg all the way up,and over bar, and it would be dangerous to have to stop suddenly. But keep trying, you will get better every week.
Hi Carol, I had my hip surgery almost exactly a year before you, May 30, 2017. I would encourage you to get outside every day. Maybe a couple of short walks. Also my PT told me I could sit on the stationary exercise bike for 30 minutes a day so try that. Try and make lunch plans with friends just to get out and enjoy yourself again. Trust me you will get better, and the pain will subside. There are days now that I actually forget I had the surgery. I am back to most all of my activities (well no more running on the beach) and am so glad I had this surgery.
Sounds like you’re doing very well, Kathy! Good for you! I’m into my 7th week and my leg and are still partially numb and has tingling sensation. It makes it more difficult to walk. My hip isn’t a problem. It’s my ankle and back of my leg. I read all the replies but none mentioned about numbness. Guess i’m Just not so lucky. I’m hoping all these will go away in time.
Take care!
Hi, I had numbness all the way through my first year of recovery, it is just now feeling normal at 1year 1month. Don’t worry, the doctor told me it is just small nerves recovering.
Hi Millie! I am still numb on outside are of thigh, sort of skin sore but yet numb if that makes since! Its to the outside of my incision area. I guard it pretty well! My actual hip seems pretty good, just get really uncomfortable on the car rides. The seats in both the Camry and especially our SUV just hit me wrong after a few minutes. And my inner thigh muscle is still pretty tight so that makes doing some things a little uncomortable. Just need to be patient I guess and wait! You will get over the numbness, its just from all the pushing and pulling that goes on during surgery. I hear its actually pretty brutal if you watch a video, which I wont do!! Hopefully by this time next year we can say it was well worth it!!
I was allowed to cycle at 10-12 weeks, but had problems getting my good leg over the saddle too.
Bought myself a lovely light ladies frame bike, and love getting out on it.
Hopefully I'll be able to get back n it soon.
I was also cleared to ride at my 6 week check up but there was no way I was going to attempt that leg over the seat! My bike only weighs 14 pounds, super light, its just that its a 56cm as I am 5/10, so getting it over that seat is way too much right now. I am going today to look at ladies bikes, will see what happens!
Great. I don't care what I look like,a guy on a ladies bike.
I can now go so much faster than my wife,a good exercise regime is essential.
I'm now at 6 months post anterior THR and continue to have thigh numbness. I was told it could take up to year for full recovery. The nerve twinges don't happen as often now so I am happy about that. It is good to have others' comments about the time involved so I know I'm not the only one with this. It's a lot better than the constant hip pain (bone on bone) prior to surgery.
Hi...I ride horses...but my Dr said to me once you can balance on operated leg and rotate you can ride..and that happened around 8 weeks for me... It was difficult to swing my leg over but alot better than before surgery...before surgery I literally crawled on.. so I'm very happy...I'm 12 weeks now...my riding is very light..but I'm happy..I'm still very tight in my thighs..and sore .but I feel I'm walking better...I think it takes time..everything is readjusting and different muscles are working..
Thanks Connie! I am able to stand on the operated leg fine. No pain at all, just inner thigh is so tight. Doing lots of swimming and walking, and that has helped tremendously! I am going to try and get on Sunday and see how it goes. Hes a big boy, but I do use a mounting block so that will help. Right before my surgery, I could barely get that leg over, and getting off was worse. I would get halfway off, then hang there. THanks God I have a very patient, quiet horse! Hoping its alot better now! Happy trails to you!! Thanks for the info!!
Kathyk I would really stop running if I were you. But that's me. My .02. My doctor told me running people are just wearing down their prosthetic at a more rapid rate. He smiled at that because that's going to make him more wealthy.
i had just the same problem ,trying to get on my bike-mine has quite a high crossbar, and before,i found it easier to swing leg over seat, while lowering bike slightly, i got stuck! i thanked heaven id gone out straight after a very early dog walk, and no one was about or i wouldve felt a right fool! eventually i twigged using unoperated leg might be a good idea, and i got off safely and walked home!reluctant to try again, now!xxx
