The ophthalmologist Mr Day did not mention the change in car lights over the years and how blinding an array of piercing lights can be when they are coming towards you in the dark on a country road.

I was taught while learning to drive (back in the early 60s) that if you are blinded by oncoming lights at night always look where your own dipped lights are illuminating the nearside road edge and on no account to look directly into the oncoming lights and I still find that that’s good advice.
